JAKE CUENCA is the busiest actor this year. So far, he’s been seen in “Nuwebe” (a Cinemalaya entry), “Lihis” (a Sineng Pambansa entry), “Tuhog” (with Star Cinema), the currently shown “Status: It’s Complicated” (with Regal) and coming up next on November 27 is “When the Love Has Gone” (with Viva.) He has also finished a new movie with Direk Tikoy Aguiluz.
“Nakakatuwa kasi I was able to work with various film companies and joined different festivals, work with various actors and did all sorts of roles to show I can be versatile enough na puede sa comedy, sa drama, sa action,” he says.
Why did he accept playing Cristine Reyes’ gay husband in “When the Love Has Gone” when he just did a gay role in “Lihis”? “Magkaiba naman sila. Sa ‘Lihis’, I cannot come out, closeted ako as a rebel who falls in love with a comrade. Dito sa ‘When the Love’, out na out naman ako after mabuko ni Cristine ang totoo kong gender preference. My role here was originally played by Tito Eddie Garcia in ‘Nagalit ang Buwan sa Haba ng Gabi’, which I did watch muna to make sure na maiba naman ang interpretation ko sa gay character na ginagampanan namin pareho.”
How is it working with Cristine and Gabby Concepcion? “Cristine and I have worked sa ABS-CBN so friends na kami. Si Sir Gabby, he played my dad in ‘Kahit Puso’y Masugatan’ at mahirap siyang ka-eksena, mape-pressure kasi he’s ageless, poging-pogi pa rin kaya dapat magpapogi ka rin ng husto nang di ka matabunan sa eksena.”
Right now, he’s busy with “Maria Mercedes” and it’s common knowledge he’s wooing its star, Jessy Mendiola. “Yes, itong soap muna namin ang focus ko, and yes, si Jessy. Hindi ko naman siya minamadali. Matagal ang pagsasamahan lalo ngayon at hit ang aming show.”
How come all his past girlfriends (Roxanne Guinoo, Melissa Ricks, Lovi Poe) feel bad about after their breakup and the love is gone? “I can’t blame them. May kasalanan din ako. But whatever they say against me, hinding-hindi ako sasagot o magsasalita against them. Kaya next time na mag-girlfriend ako, ayoko na for the love to be gone. I want her to be The One.”
