DIRECTOR JOSELITO ‘JAY’ ALTAREJOS is back in circulation after more than a year of hibernation. “I went to Cebu, Dumaguete, various places and took a long vacation,” he says. “But I was not totally idle as I was able to finish a new movie, ‘Unfriend’, written by Zig Dulay, to be shown at the Berlin International Filmfest on February 8. I will be going there with my lead actor, Sandino Martin and the cinematographer, Arvin Viola. It’s been bought for international distribution by Fortissimo Films.”
What’s it all about? “It’s about a gay romance in the time of social media. Sandino meets Angelo Ilagan through Facebook. They meet, go to bed, and breaks up again through social media. The story happens only from Christmas Eve to Christmas Day. Boots Anson Roa plays the role of Sandino’s grandma.”
Jay is noted for his pink films “Ang Lalaki sa Parola” (a big hit when shown locally), “Lihim ni Antonio” (shown in various film festivals abroad, especially in several cities in Spain and Eastern Europe), “Kambyo”, “Laro sa Buhay ni Juan” (shown in New York, Boston and Chicago), “Little Boy Big Boy” and the Cinemalaya entry, “Pink Halo-Halo”. After his last soap with GMA-7, “Legacy”, Jay is now with TV5 directing the Thursday night psycho-drama, “Obsession”, starring Bianca King, Marvin Agustin, Martin Escudero and Neri Naig. It started airing last Thursday and he’s happy that TV5 said it surpassed the ratings of the show it replaced, “For Love or Money”. So how’s Bianca in the lead role of a woman who has a change of face as Vanessa? “She’s very competent, hardworking and certainly knows what she’s doing. Lahat naman sila, okay. Maraming twists in the story. The real Vanessa will come up so Bianca will be playing dual roles. Another character, magpapabago rin ng mukha dahil sa ‘Obsession’. Then it will be revealed that Elizabeth Oropesa, the mother of Marvin Agustin, is actually a fugitive from the law dahil may ginawa siyang malagim na krimen in the past.”
Jay is also busy with the prospect of two new movies. First is a romance-drama for Regal, based on a script of Gina Tagasa about one great love. They’re trying to get Marian Rivera to play the lead role. Another one is a possible Cinemalaya entry about a wedding, written by Zig Dulay.
