GOV. JEORGE ER ESTREGAN of Laguna is glad that his home province won the bid in hosting the Palarong Pambansa this year. He signed the memorandum of agreement with DepEd Sec. Armin Luistro last Monday. This is the annual sports meet’s 57th edition and will be held from May 4 to 10 at the sports complex in Sta. Cruz, Laguna. The place is now being prepared for various sports events and several schools will be renovated to house the 15,000 athletes and personnel from all over the country that will join the affair.
“This will be the biggest, grandest Palarong Pambansa ever,” says Gov ER. “We’re inviting Manny Pacquiao and James Yap to grace the opening ceremonies. The Palarong Pambansa in Laguna will be the benchmark of all future Palarong Pambansa sports events.”
Laguna’s modern sports facilities that include the Laguna Recreational, Cultural and Sports Stadium and a 70-meter world-class archery range, plus the newly built track oval, football field, and dorm proved to be province’s advantage in winning over the other bidders. Three new events will be introduced: wushu, billiards and wrestling.
We congratulated Gov. ER for producing and starring in one of the best films this year, Chito Rono’s “Boy Golden”. He says he’s not disappointed that it didn’t win any award except best float in the recent Metro filmfest. “I’m just happy na it got so many good reviews from various writers and critics. Marami pa namang ibang award-giving bodies diyan na mas credible,” he says.
He’d be very busy with Palarong Pambansa. Does this mean he won’t have time anymore to join the 2014 filmfest? “I’ll still join it. Commitment ko yan kay FPJ at sa mga tao sa movie industry. For this year, I will do a movie na pambata, ‘Pedro Penduko’.”
Gov. ER is also happy that his “La Laguna Festival, the Festival of Life” has been given the Hall of Fame Award by the Dept. of Tourism for being the Best Tourism Event in the country for three consecutive years, 2011 to 2013. Laguna with its 6 cities and 24 municipalities is really full of beautiful places like Pagsanjan Falls, Mt. Makiling, the hot baths of Los Banos, Lake Caliraya, plus old churches and historic sites, making it one of top must-see places to visit for domestic tourists.
