EACH NEW YEAR brings new hope for new faces in showbiz. Here’s a list of young stars who, given the right projcets, might shine and make it big in 2014.
First on our list is Jasmine Curtis Smith. Everyone who has seen her act and do hosting agrees that she’s much better than her Ate Anne, who’s the biggest female celeb we have right now just in terms of her numerous endorsements alone. We’re hoping TV5 will succeed in building her up with the projects they aim to do for her this year, which includes a drama anthology show named after her and a movie that pairs her with Nora Aunor.
At ABS-CBN, they’re putting their bets on Julia Barretto who’s being launched to solo stardom in the soap “Mira Bella”, opposite Enrique Gil and Sam Concepcion. Will she succeed in filling up the shoes left behind by her aunt, Claudine? Or will the feud involving the entire Barretto family help put her down? We’ll find out when “Mira Bella” is shown.
Another ABS-CBN bet is Jessy Mendiola who’s in “Maria Mercedes” now and will next be paired with the top Kapamilya actor, John Lloyd Cruz, in a new movie. Meantime, the Kathniel love team will still rule it this new year, as seen in their toprating soap “Got to Believe” and their hit filmfest movie, “Pagpag”.
At GMA-7, they have an ace in the Janine Gutierrez-Elmo Magalona love team that is now doing well in “Villa Quintana”. Janine is so pretty on screen and she can also act well. She can even manage to go solo, even without a permanent ka-love team.
TV5 has another prospective star in Ritz Azul, who can do more mature roles. After going sexy in "Misibis Bay", she currently shows that she has good acting chops in “For Love or Money”. TV5 is also gambling on four newcomers in their daring local adaptation of “Pretty Little Liars”: Chanel Morales, Sophie Albert, Stephanie Rowe and Danielle Lee. Here’s hoping they’ll really succeed in building up these young women into bright stars.
Meantime, GMA would have to double up their efforts in discovering and developing more exciting stars that will gain the support of the viewing public. They have given breaks to Barbie Forteza, Bea Binene, Kim Rodriguez, Julie Anne San Jose and Thea Tolentino, but these young actresses definitely need a lot more push to zoom to fame, along with their male counterparts like Derrick Monasterio, Kristoffer Martin, Jeric Gonzales and Ruru Madrid. This year, they should make their stars shine brighter to show that they’re not what their detractors call “bituing walang ningning”.
