IVANA CHUBBUCK is an acting coach and author, the founder and director of the Ivana Chubbuck Studio in Hollywood. She was brought by ABS-CBN Star Magic to Manila to personally conduct an acting workshop today and tomorrow, March 1 & 2, at the Dolphy Theatre. Her Hollywood students include Halle Berry (who personally thanked Ivana in her acceptance speech when Halle won the Oscar best actress award), Charlize Theron, Brad Pitt, Terrence Howard, Elisabeth Shue, Catherine Keener, Djimon Honsou, America Ferrera, Eva Mendes, Kate Bosworth, Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev of “Vampire Diaries”, Jim Carrey, Jessica Alba, Radha Mitchell, Carrie-Anne Moss, Garry Shandling, Jessica Biel, Judith Light, Amy Smart, Jared Leto, David Spade, Matthew Perry, David Boreanaz, Ali Larter and Beyoncé Knowles in “Dream Girls”.
Ivana Chubbuck is the creator of the cutting edge and widely adopted Chubbuck Technique discussed in her book, “The Power of the Actor: The Chubbuck Technique”, described as "The 12-Step Acting technique That Will Take You From Script to a Living, Breathing, Dynamic Character". It has been adopted for use as a textbook in many schools in the USA and translated into various languages around the world. Ivana was honored by The Russian International Filmfest (she is of Russian descent) with a lifetime achievement award for her contributions to the film industry.
We ask Ivana how her technique differs from those of other famous acting coaches like Stanislavsky, Lee Strasberg, Stella Adler and Eric Morris whose “Being” also became popular here. She said she’s not familiar with Morris but her technique is somewhat like Stanislavsky. “But Stanislavsky’s is 100 years old,” she says. “You have to grow. Mine focuses on script analysis, knowing the objective of the scene, using conflicts and problems as opportunities to find solutions, taking hurtful pain and using it as fuel to overcome, win and have catharsis. It puts the actor in a win-win situation and empowers him to help him face issues effectively even in real life.”
She adds that actors are not born but made, honed and trained through years of practice. It was Star Magic Training Head Rahyan Carlos who first had an intensive teacher’s training program under her in 2012 and he’s the only Filipino authorized to teach the Chubbuck Technique. He’ll conduct another workshop on March 22 & 23, “Chubbuck Technique Under Rahyan Carlos”, which is open to the public, both amateurs and professionals, with three categories: introductory, advanced and the master class. For inquiries, call Star Magic Workshops at 415-2272 local 5142 or 5243 or you can email starmagicworkshops@abs-cbn.com or facebook.com/starmagic workshops.
Meantime, those who’ll attend the workshop this weekend are Gerald Anderson, Jake Cuenca, Akiko Solon, Dimples Romana, Koreen Medina, Arron Villaflore, Ynna Asistio, Arjo Atayde, Xian Lim, Sam Milby, Piolo Pascual, Liza Dino, Carla Martinez, Issa Litton, Nico Policarpio, Christian Bables, Roj Gealon and Suzette Ranillo. They were assigned specific scenes to do and will later be critiqued by Ivana herself.
