TODAY (SATURDAY) IS THE opening of the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia and there’s a Pinoy to root for. After a 22-year absence, our country is represented by figure skater Michael Christian Martinez, 17, from Muntinlupa, the first homegrown Filipino figure skater competing in The Winter Olympics. He did not expect to qualify but he and his mother took the risk of competing this year. He now aims to finish in the top 24 in the oldest sport in The Winter Olympics.
Other Pinoys will also compete. JR Celski, who has a Pinay mom and American dad, is competing in the short-track speed skating for the USA. He aims for a gold medal after capturing two bronze medals at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games. Then there’s Gilmore Junio, a long track speed skater representing Canada. Born and raised in Calgary, Alberta to Filipino parents, he’s considered ‘the fastest Filipino on ice’. According to a Canadian news article, Junio is proud of his Filipino heritage. Catch them and all the exciting events of the XXII Olympic Winter Games starting today on TV5, the Philippine Olympic Network.
