OLIVIA LAMASAN starting directing in 1994 with “Maalaala Mo Kaya, the Movie” starring Aiko Melendez (who now plays mother roles) and Chin Chin Gutierrez (who has become a nun). In 20 years, she has directed 10 films or roughly, one film every two years. She has now finished helming her 11th film, “Starting Over Again”, starring Piolo Pascual and Toni Gonzaga.
“After ‘The Mistress’, I want to do something light kasi puro dramas ang ginagawa ko so I want a romantic comedy naman,” she says. “I chanced upon this storyline about a couple who think of breaking up while on their way to a wedding. Malou Santos (Star Cinema’s big boss) said, sige gawin mo yan for Toni Gonzaga. That was in December 2012. Then nakita namin si Toni, she said, o tuloy na ang request mo, magkakasama na kayo ni Inang. And Toni said, wala ng bawian yan. Malou said matagal ko nang nire-request maidirek uli si Piolo after we did ‘Milan’ in 2004, so pagsamahin daw sila ni Toni. Then I realized di na bagay ang material for them, dapat more mature ang story. So we decided to do a movie on exes. There’s this site where you can write to a person and send it on a date you want set in the future. So naging romantic drama na siya with a lot of comedic moments sa character ni Toni. Ang working title namin is ‘Unlove You’ based on a song by KZ Tandingan, but Malou suggested ‘Starting Over Again’ and we all agreed na mas bagay yun.”
Direk Olive says both Piolo and Toni give their best in “Starting Over Again” that opens today in theatres nationwide. “Malakas ang kilig factor sa kanila at maraming makaka-relate sa love story nila in the movie.”
How come Toni was said to be hesitant to do their love scene? “Kasi it’s her first love scene. Walang pinakitang skin but siya ang more aggressive. Full of passion. Animalistic ang dating.”
Toni says she agreed to do it only because it’s Olive who’s the director. “But natakot ako kasi she was directing us while we’re doing the love scene. O, Piolo, itaas mo ang shirt ni Toni, halik-halikan mo sa leeg. Toni, lumiyad ka. But I did it because I trust her. I did my best para huwag biguin si Inang and I hope hindi siya nabigo sa’kin sa pelikulang ito. I just won’t let my parents and my boyfriend watch it.”
“Starting Over Again” will premiere at SM Megamall tomorrow night and opens nationwide on Wednesday.
