AIKO MELENDEZ, who’s turning 39 on December 16, is glad to be back before the cameras shooting an indie Cinemalaya entry, “Asintado (Between the Eyes)”, for Director Louie Ignacio who’s also producing it. “But I’m having cold feet. My last movie pa was the comedy, ‘Yaya and Angelina’, where Jomari (Yllana) and I played the parents of Ogie Alcasid as Angelina. Pero nang mabasa ko talaga ang script nitong ‘Asintado’, I told Direk Louie Ignacio lagot siya pag hindi ito napunta sa akin. I really fell in love with the role of the mother na ipaglalaban nang husto ang dalawang anak niya against a drug pusher played by Gabby Eigenmann. The last time I felt like this was when I did ‘Maalaala Mo Kaya, the Movie’ two years ago,” she laughs, “in 1994, where I won best actress.”
Is it true she and Jomari have reconciled as they’re often seen together? “Totoong madalas kaming magkasama pero hindi kami nagkakabalikan. Matagal na kong wala karelasyon, five years na. After I became a Christian. Hindi na puede yung makikipag-sex ka nang walang kasal. Some people might think, ang arte-arte nito, e dalawa na ang anak niya. But as a Christian, it’s the right thing to do.”
So what does she do when she feels the urge? “I take a shower. Or I pray para mawala yun sa isip ko.”
Is she going back to politics? “There’s an offer for me to run again as councilor, pero ipinagdarasal ko pa. If it’s the Lord’s will for me to run again for public office, then so be it.”
How’s her children? We thought her son with Jomari, Andrei, is joining showbiz? “Yes, 15 na siya, but then, we thought he’s too young so sabi namin, magtapos muna siya kahit ng high school man lang, Second year na siya, e. Si Marthena naman is in grade two at Poveda.”
