ALWYN UYTINGCO gets the biggest break in his career playing the title role in TV5’s “Beki Boxer”. Alwyn turned 26 last Feb. 11 and he says this project is his best birthday gift. He was introduced as part of ABS-CBN Star Magic Batch 9 in 2002 and starred in both movie (“Ang Tanging Ina”) and TV projects (“Qpids”, “Kay Tagal Kang Hinintay”).
He moved to TV5 in 2011 and was paired with Alex Gonzaga in “Babaeng Hampaslupa”. He has since done “Nandito Ako”, “Kapitan Awesome”, “Sa Ngalan ng Ina” and “Cassandra, Warrior Angel” for them. Now, he plays the title role no less in “Beki Boxer” that will start airing on March 31 at 7 PM.
Playing a gay role is nothing new to him as he was a big hit playing Ai Ai de las Alas’ gay son in the four “Tanging Ina” movies. “Pero ibang klaseng material ang ‘Beki Boxer’ kasi hindi siya basta comedy,” he says. “Ipinapakita rito yung struggle ng character ko na maging successful boxer kahit na beki siya. And for the first time, may romantic interest ako rito, si Vin Abrenica, at kinakabahan ako dahil may supposed romantic moments kami dito. Ka-love triangle namin dito si Danita Paner at may confrontation scenes din ako with her. I’m really grateful to TV5 for believing in my talent and giving me this project. I know viewers will like it as they will root for my character na magaling na boksingero, pero gay pala. Ang preparasyon ko para sa role, para talagang sa isang professional boxer. Nag-diet ako, ensayo araw-araw, iniwasan ko pati ang paglabas-labas sa gabi. Mahirap, but worth it naman. ”
He’s not afraid that people might think he’s gay because he’s always been sure of his masculinity. Also, everyone knows he’s been going steady with Jennica Garcia for four years now. He’s glad to be directed in “Beki Boxer” by Jade Castro, the indie director who did the award-winning films, “Endo” and “Zombadings” that gave best actor awards to its stars Jason Abalos and Martin Escudero. Aside from him, Danita and Vin, “Beki Boxer” also stars John Regala, Christian Vasquez, Joross Gamboa and Onyok Velasco.
