THE PHILIPPINE Popular Music Festival (also known as Philpop) is a songwriting contest launched in 2012 with the foundation headed by Manny V. Pangilinan and future national artist for music Ryan Cayabyab. The 2014 finals night was held at the Meralco Theater last Saturday and the grand prize went to the inspirational song “Salbabida” about people who save others, written by Jungee Marcelo and interpreted by Kyla Alvarez.
They are richer by P1 million with a trophy from sculptor Ramon Orlina. Jungee also won 2nd place last year for “Pansamantagal”. First runner up is "Awit Mo’y Nandito Pa" by Ronaldo Sorioso, sung by Aldrich Talonding and James Bucong. 2nd runner up is "Torpe" by Daryl Ong, sung by Kris Lawrence. The Spinnr (o baka, may magpalit na naman ng spelling ng Spinnr at lagyan ng E, gaya ng Jak Roberto na nilagyan din ng E, ganyan talaga spelling niyan kaya huwag nang panghimasukan, please) People’s Choice Award is "Kung Akin Ang Langit" by Chi Datu-Bocobo and Isaac Joseph Garcia, sung by Mcoy Fundales and Clara Benin.
The finals was hosted by Christian Bautista, Yia Villania and Tim Yap, with Kuh Ledesma, Gary V, Julie Anne San Jose, Gloc 9, Denise Barbacena, Sam Concepcion and Tippy Dos Santos as guest performers, directed by Rico Gutierrez and with Marc Lopez as musical director. The Philpop Musicfest not only aims to give and discover Filipino songwriters the opportunity to create original songs, but also aims to renew awareness for original Filipino music (OPM).
The 8 other finalists for PhilPop 2014 are: “Babalikan Mo Rin Ako” by Soc Villanueva, sung by Nikki Gil; “Dear Heart” Written by Mike Villegas, sung by Kiana Valenciano; “Hangout Lang” by Allan Feliciano and Isaac Garcia, sung by Duncan Ramos and Young JV; “Langit Umaawit” again by Toto Sorioso, sung by Tom Rodriguez; “No Girlfriend Since Break” by Davey Langit, sung by Luigi D’ Avola; “Qrush on You” by Knowa Lazarus and Flava Matiks, sung by Jay-R, Elmo Magalona and Q-York; “The Only One” by Popsie San Pedro, sung by Thor Dulay; “Song on a Broken String” by Jude Gitamandoc and Therese Villarante, sung by Nicole Laurel Asensio.
