DIRECTOR JOEY REYES says he’s overwhelmed when Mother Lily Monteverde defended him at the grand presscon of “Somebody to Love” when Alfie Lorenzo called him “malas”. He says he really admires Mother Lily as a producer because she gives her filmmakers complete freedom. Joey is turning 60 this coming October and he’s glad that he has patched things up with his nephew, Director Mark Reyes, after they had a rift and have not been on speaking terms for some time.
“It happened on my mom’s death bed a few months ago,” he says. “My mom was 101 years old and parang she just waited for us na magkabati dahil noong ibulong sa kanya ng caregiver niya na, okay na, nagkabati na, nag-uusap na sila, right after that, she left us.”
He feels good that they’ve reconciled and he’s now at peace with everyone, which is good especially now that he’s promoting a movie about love, “Somebody to Love”.
“This is my comeback film with Regal. My last movie with them was ‘Monster Mom’ six years ago. It’s always nice to work with Mother Lily kasi she trusts her director. Hindi siya nakikialam. ‘Somebody to Love’ is expensive to make as it has nine major characters with different stories, plus many other minor characters. Kung iisa-isahin mo ang pagkukuwento sa kanila, siguro aabutin ng five hours ang movie. So I told Mother, I will use plenty of split screens in telling the story. Added expense you, pero pumayag naman siya. So kahit maraming stories and characters ito, mabilis na mabilis ang pacing at ang galing ng ensemble acting ng buong cast.”.
“Somebody to Love” stars Carla Abellana, Iza Calzado, Jason Abalos, Matteo Guidicelli, Isabel Daza, Maricar Reyes, Kiray Celis, Alex Castro, Nathalie Hart, Jaclyn Jose, Jackielou Blanco and Beauty Gonzales. This opens on Wednesday, August 20, as Mother Lily’s special birthday presentation.
