WE HAD A GREAT time at the Star Records launch of the debut album of ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra, “Decades of OPM”, containing immortal music from the 70s up to the present. The 42-pc orchestra, with Gerald Salonga conducting, performed several cuts from the album and we were so enthralled, especially with their awesome rendition of “Langis at Tubig” that came out like an impressive symphonic suite.
The album is spiced up with the vocals of guest singers, like Gary Valenciano in “Kapalaran”, Yeng Constantino in “Hawak Kamay”, Martin NIevera in “Maging Sino Ka Man”, Vina Morales in “After All”, Angeline Quinto in “Himig Handog Suite”, Piolo Pascual in “Kung Kailangan Mo Ako”, Daniel Padilla in the “OPM Dance Suite with Katawan, Awitin Mo Isasayaw Ko and Rock Baby Rock”, Enrique Gil and Abra in “Totoy Bibo” and with Louie Ocampo on the piano for “Be My Lady”.
The album is something all lovers of Pinoy music will surely treasure and we’re so glad they gave us a copy. It’s now in record bars nationwide for only P350 and on digital format at starmusic.ph, amazon.com, my musicstore and iTunes. During the presscon, Gerald, now a dad to a son aged 7 and a daughter who’s 4, asked a writer to be a guest conductor and Crispina Belen of the Manila Bulletin went up stage and tried it. Then Gerald asked Nestor Cuartero of Tempo and Allan Sancon of PEP to sing the vocals of “Maging Sino Ka Man”. In fairness to them, they all did a pretty good job.
The album, a first for Star Records, is a joint venture of ABS-CBN and First Philippine Holdings Corp. to bring orchestra music closer to the people with the help of singers who are a great attraction to our celebrity-oriented public. Maestro Gerald even introduced to us the various musical instruments comprising the orchestra. If you want to watch them perform live, they will have a concert at BDO Hall in Makati with Richard Bamping, a world renowned British cellist, and on November 8 & 9, they will play Disney themes at “Disney’s Tale As Old As Time” at the CCP.
We think the album is just the start as there’s a wealth of beautiful musical material that they can also mine for future albums. For more info, visit the Facebook fanpage of Star Records on Facebook.com/starrecordsphil and follow them @starrecordsph on Twitter.
