WE’RE SO GLAD the Pinoy Music Council is intensifying its efforts to increase public awareness and appreciation of Original Pilipino Music. The council is composed of the OPM or Organisasyon ng mga Pilipinong Mang-aawit, FILSCAP or Filipino Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, AMP or Asosasyon ng Musikong Pilipino, PARI or Philippine Association of Recording Industry, MCAP or Music Copyright Administrators of the Philippines and the PhilPop Foundation.
They put up the Pinoy Music Festival that started last August 16 with pocket performances of top singers in the local music industry who performed in various venues at the Ayala central business district. The finale will be held on September 5, Friday, at the Ayala Triangle Gardens in Makati, where different kinds of Filipino music will be performed by some of the biggest stars in local music. This one-day open air celebration of local music is free of charge. You and your friends can just go there and watch the performers for free.
This festival is a follow up activity to sustain the momentum created by the recently concluded Pinoy Music Summit, which gathered various recommendations on how to increase support and appreciation of OPM. Festival Director Noel Cabangon, concurrently OPM VP and Filscap President, says this project together with travelling My OPM Playlist, will surely increase support for the passage of an executive order that will declare a Linggo ng Musikang Pilipino that seeks to persuade people, academic institutions, commercial establishments, radio stations, bars, restos and concert halls nationwide to play only Filipino music for one whole week, as part of a continuing campaign to promote OPM ang encourage the Filipino people to love and celebrate music that is truly our own or “sariling atin”.
“The idea of the First Pinoy Music Festival is to kick off even more activities to increase the use of our music, not just by individuals but also by communities and the business sector that uses music in their operations,” says Noel. “All these will certainly inspire Filipino musicians and composers to create more superior original work and for the listeners to appreciate our own music.”
Supporting the Pinoy Music festival are the Make It Happen Make It Makati Foundation, Bactidol, Penshoppe, Hotel of Asia, DoubleDragon, Century Pacific Foods, Pagcor and Universal Records.
