Beauty In A Bottle': A Comedy That Satirizes The Beauty Business & The Obsession For Beauty

‘BEAUTY IN A BOTTLE’ is the only comedy among the six films to open simultaneously on October 29. “The rest are horror films naman (‘Blood Ransom’, ‘T’yanak’, ‘Sigaw sa Hatinggabi’, ‘Hukluban’ and ‘Bacao’), so naiiba kami,” says Quantum Films producer Atty. Joji Alonso.”If you want to have fun and a real good time laughing in so many scenes, then watch our movie.”

Also, we heard that the Sineng Pambansa entries will share only two cinemas in each SM outlet, so they have limited exposure, compared to “Beauty in a Bottle” that will be shown in all cinema outlets nationwide, include Ayala and Robinson malls.

“Beauty in a Bottle” is from a story idea of writer-director Chris Martinez. It’s a satire on the beauty business and everyone’s obsession with beauty. Assunta de Rossi is concerned about growing old, Angelica Panganiban about getting fat and Angeline Quinto about being an ugly duckling in a family of beautiful women.

“These are valid issues na pinoproblema ng maraming babae,” says the film’s writer-director, Antoinette Jadaone, who helmed the acclaimed “Six Degrees of Separation from Lilia Cuntapay” for Cinema One and the recently completed teen romance, “Relax, It’s Just Pag-ibig”. “Si Assunta, may issues about aging. Si Angelica, may weight issues. Si Angeline, worried maging pangit. Also in the cast are Tom Rodriguez as Angeline’s boyfriend, Nanette Inventor as Tom’s mom, Boboy Garovillo as Angeline’s dad, and Bianca Manalo and Anna Luna as her prettier sisters. Kasama rin sina Carmi Martin, Ellen Adarna, Empress Schuck, Ricci Chan and Miko Raval.”

Since this is her first mainstream work, how was it working with her more experienced stars? “I’d like to thank muna Direk Chris Martinez for recommending me to Atty. Joji Alonso of Quantum Films to direct this movie. Silang lahat, masarap katrabaho kahit new director lang ako. They respected me. Actually, mahirap gumawa ng comedy at suwerte akong my three lead stars all have good comedic timing.”

Didn’t Angelica have any hesitation accepting her role as Estelle, an artista having weight problems, which she is really encountering in real life? Didn’t she get any fat memo from management telling her to slim down?

“I had no second thoughts after reading the script,” she says. “Na-challenge ako sa role, lalo na kung paano ako papayat sa ending. Naka-relate ako sa role ko kasi pag artista, napakadali sa ibang tao na husgahan ka. Ay ang taba! It’s good I can do both drama and comedy. Mas mahirap ang comedy. Kasi sa drama, you just your use emotions, but in comedy, dapat utak ang gamitin mo. Dapat, matalino ka. Hindi naman ako nabigyan ng fat memo. Text lang. Sabi, Iha, tama na. Sabi ko naman, Opo, Ma’am Charo.”
