THE FILM DEVELOPMENT Council of the Philippines (FDCP) held a presscon for the four entries in their Sineng Pambansa Horror Plus Filmfest to open on October 29 in SM Cinemas nationwide.
“T’yanak” – Directed by Peque Gallaga and Lore Reyes, this is a reboot of the 1988 horror classic, “Tiyanak”. The most star-studded among the entries, it has Judy Ann Santos in the lead role as the protective mom of the baby tiyanak, supported by Solenn Heussaff, Tom Rodriguez, Sid Lucero, Liza Lorena and Adrian Cabido, with original “Tiyanak” stars Janice de Belen and Lotlot de Leon in special roles, plus the guest appearances of Alessandra de Rossi, Paolo Contis and Ricky Davao.
So which one is better: the original or the reboot? “Walang better dahil magkaiba sila,” says Peque. “The original introduced what the tiyanak is in Philippine folklore. The reboot now goes deeper as to what the tiyanak does and mas malalim rin ang story.”
“Hukluban (The Crone)” – This is also a reboot of the 1983 Gil Portes film, “Gabi Kung Sumikat ang Araw”, with Gina Alajar as an old woman who becomes young and beautiful as night falls. This time, they have a trilogy, with controversial Krista Miller in the lead role of Mira, the woman who manifests herself to Kiko Matos in three different generations. In 1948, Kiko is Pepito. In 1974, he is Kandro. And in 2014, he is Homer. All these men get involved with Mira.
The movie features very hot love scenes between Krista and Kiko. Direk Arman Reyes, upon seeing the erotic scenes, asked Direk Gil: “Saan mo maipapalabas yan?” And Direk Joel Lamangan exclaimed: “This is not a horror film, this is porno.”
“Sigaw sa Hatinggabi” – Directed by Romy Suzara, this is based on a true story about a politician and his battered wife. When the politician suddenly dies, the suspect is a ghost. A medium and some spirit questors were called to help solve the high profile crime. Regine Angeles plays the medium, Alvin Anson is the politician, with Richard Quan, Paloma, Lance Raymundo, Hero Bautista, Chanel Latorre as the spirit questors.
Direk Romy Suzara says: “Don’t watch the movie alone kung matatakutin kayo dahil tiyak na mapapasigaw kayo sa loob ng sinehan.”
The fourth entry is “Bacao” by Direk Edgardo Boy Vinarao, starring Michelle Madrigal as a beautiful provincial lass coveted by the men in her village, with Arnold Reyes, Alvin Anson, Leo Martinez, Marife Necesito, Irma Adlawan and Menggie Cobarrubias. We’ve already reviewed this and we’re really impressed by the beauty and competent acting of Michelle.
We really wish all the movies would make money at the tills but they’re up againt two other films released by giant companies: “Blood Ransom” starring Anne Curtis by Viva Films and “Beauty in a Bottle” starring Angelica Panganiban by Star Cinema.
