Angelica Panganiban, Sandino Martin & Visayan Actor Matt Daclan Win Top Acting Honors In Cinema One Originals Awards Night

THE AWARDS NIGHT for this year’s Cinema One Originals was held Sunday night at Dolphy Theatre, ably hosted by Piolo Pascual and Iza Calzado. The ABS-CBN champs of various talent searches did the opening number: Erik Santos, Yeng Constantino, Jovit Baldivino, KZ Tandingan and Mitoy Yonting. Broadway singer Migs Ayesa did another musical number, also Piolo and Toni Gonzaga who paid tribute to the ten directors whose films are past winners in Cinema One.

Among the presenters are Director Joel Lamangan and Angeli Bayani (who presented the best director and best picture awards), Jericho Rosales, Angel Aquino, Shamaine Buencamino, Mara Lopez, Ken Anderson (brother of Gerald), Dawn Jimenez, Kean Cipriano, JM de Guzman, Ketchup Eusebio, Mimi Juareza, Korean actor Jisoo Jim, Maria Isabel Lopez, Katya Santos, Jason Gainza and Garry Lim.

And here’s the list of winners. Best Sound – Corinne de San Jose for “Violator”. Best Music – Tengal for “Hindi Sila Tatanda”. Best production design – Diwa de Leon for “Esprit de Corps”. Best editing – Lawrence Ang for “Violator”. Best cinematography – Aditya Kumar for “Bitukang Manok”. Best Screenplay – Jay Abello and Dwight Gaston for “Red”.

Best supporting actor – Andy Bais for “Violator”. Best supporting actress – Maria Isabel Lopez for “Lorna”. Best actor – Sandino Martin for “Esprit de Corps”, tie with Matt Daclan of "Soap Opera". Best actress – Angelica Panganiban for “That Thing Called Tadhana” (absent as she’s travelling abroad with John Lloyd Cruz). Best director – Kanakan Balintagos for “Esprit de Corps”. Best picture – “Violator” (with P250,000 cash prize).

Maria Isabel Lopez brought the house down during her acceptance speech, saying: “This is my second best supporting actress award. The first time was in ‘Kinatay’ na naghubad ako. Dito, hindi ako naghubad. Pinauubaya ko na lang ang paghuhubad sa anak ko, si Mara, who told me to do the movie kahit mababa ang budget. I want to share the award with Raquel Villavicencio (her co-star in “Lorna” who’s also nominated as best supporting actress). Sana, mabigyan naman ng chance ang exotic actresses na magbida sa mga teleserye, hindi yung puro na lang mestiza.”

Like us, Jay Abello, best screenplay winner, expressed surprise over their win. “Medyo strange kasi ang daming problema sa script namin,” he says. “Ang daming ibang pelikulang mas nagagalingan ako sa script nila kaya weird yung feeling.”

Honestly, we feel bad that Shamaine lost for her tour-de-force title role portrayal of “Lorna”. Angelica is also good in “That Thing”, but Shamaine has the more complex role that required her to run through a gamut of various emotions. Mas marami siyang ginawa all throughout and she’s good in all of them and her range is just amazing.

We’re also surprised that “Violator” won best pic. This is one of the movies we walked out on because of its intense boringga factor. The director himself acknowledged in his acceptance that his film’s cinematography is so dark. You have to peer into the screen just to figure out what’s going on. How it won is truly a mystery.

There were special awards. Audience Choice Award – “That Thing Called Tadhana” by Antoinette Jadaone (with P100,000 cash prize). Biogesic Ingat na Damang-Dama Award – “Nanay Kong Noisy” by Antoinette Jadaone (also with P100,000 cash prize). Champion Detergent Bughaw Award – “That Thing Called Tadhana”.
