At The Special Screening Of Mike De Leon's 'Hindi Nahahati Ang Langit' Restored By ABS-CBN Archives, Only Dina Bonnevie Showed Up Among Its Stars

WE WERE INVITED to the special screening of the digitally restored version of “Hindi Nahahati ang Langit”, part of the ongoing Cinema One Originals Filmfest at Trinoma. Directed in 1985 by the reclusive Mike de Leon, this is based on a komiks story by Nerissa Cabral and scripted by Mia Concio. This is the love story of Noel (played by Marco Polo Garcia as a boy and Christopher de Leon as a grown up) and Melody (played by Jennifer Sevilla as a girl and Lorna Tolentino as a grownup.)

Noel is the son of the late Nestor de Villa as Ariston and Melody is the daughter of Gloria de Villa as Agnes. As kids, they’re always fighting with each other. When they grew up, Boyet marries Dina Bonnevie while Lorna marries Edu Manzano, with disastrous results. You’ll know they’ll still end up with each other but Mike de Leon is a trendsetter even then. He chose not to give the movie a happy ending.

The movie is very well acted and remains to be interesting viewing even after all these years. Lorna and Dina are both so beautiful in the movie (without retoke which is so common these days), while Christopher and Edu are at their most dashing. Writers with whom we saw the movie opine that no one among our younger actors now can hold a candle to Boyet de Leon during his prime in the 80s in terms of good looks and acting ability.

When it was first shown nearly 30 years ago, we remember there was a tiff between Mike de Leon and the producer, Vanguard Films, and Mike asked that his name be deleted from the credits. This time, Mike agreed that his name be returned to the credits. It is Mike’s most commercial film and he certainly demonstrated that he knows how to make a quality film even if it’s based on maudlin komiks material.

“Hindi Nahahati ang Langit”, the 63rd movie restored by ABS-CBN Archives headed by Leo Katigbak, is slated for a commercial run later this month and will be available for cable airing and an iTunes and DVD release next year. This is just one of their most recently newly restored movies. The other is “Kapag Langit ang Humatol” starring Vilma Santos and Richard Gomez, directed by Laurice Guillen. Fairly recent films like “Feng Shui” and “Anak” have also been restored since their original prints were marred by fungus and molds. How we wish they’d also restore classics of other companies, like “Relasyon”, “Broken Marriage” and “Sister Stella L” of Regal and Viva’s “Sinasamba Kita” and “Langis at Tubig”.
