KARLA ESTRADA is very active in the campaigns to help Yolanda victims because her mom and siblings were in Tacloban at the height of the super typhoon and four of her uncles who lived in coastal areas perished in it. “When it happened, nasa Manila ako and I was so worried about my family na hindi na makontak kahit sa cellfone,” she says. “So I travelled by car na pinuno ko ng pagkain. Pero pagdating namin sa Samar, ayaw na kaming patuluyin kasi ang mga naunang cars, ninakaw ng mga ibang tao ang food na dala nila.”
Karla eventually went there with her popular son Daniel Padilla. “25 thousand ang nagpunta at pinasaya ng anak ko,” says Karla who plays the mental hospital doctor of John Lapus in the comedy “Moron 5.2 The Transformation”.
Now, Karla and Daniel will be honored with the Handumanan Awards this Friday in the free thanksgiving concert of the Haiyan Disaster Governance Initiative (HDGI), November 7, starting 4 PM at the Quezon City Memorial Circle with top bands and celebrities performing. This is meant to thank all those who helped Tacloban City and the other areas hit in the wake of Typhoon Haiyan (“Yolanda” in the country) last year, including David Beckham and Anderson Cooper of CNN.
Carlo Maceda of the HDGI says they’re still looking for unsung heroes of Yolanda who’ll be awarded an official certificate signed by Tacloban Cong. Martin Romualdez. You can nominate anyone you know at carlomaceda10@yahoo.com.
“The disaster brought so many volunteers from among our people and from all over the world to help, showing their love for us, and we want to demonstrate our people’s appreciation and gratitude with this event,” says Carlo.
