MARTIN NIEVERA says that even if he and Pops Fernandez have been separated for several years now, people still come to him asking when they will reconcile. “They tell me, bakit daw sina Eddie Mesa and Rosemarie Gil, nagkabalikan din after so many years of separation,” he says. “I want to tell them magkaiba totally ang situation namin dahil Pops and I hosted a show together for so many years, but I just tell them, we’ll see.”
No doubt their chemistry remains very potent after all these years. Each time they utter sweet words to each other during their concerts, the fans still swoon, kinikilig, hoping against hope.
“We’ve become more comfortable with each other,” adds Martin. “We’ve become the best of friends.”
It’s good they were never bitter with each other. “For a while, naging bitter din naman ako,” says Pops. “But hindi rin naman ako happy being bitter so, I finally said, if I really cannot forget and try to forgive, then I would be miserable for the rest of my life. So, why stay there? Life can be so much better if we’re okay.”
“One thing with Pops, even when she was mad with me, she did not destroy me to our kids,” says Martin.
“You know why?” says Pops. “Kasi ayokong ma-affect ’yung kids namin. Kumbaga, ’yung hindi namin pagkakaintindihan is between Martin and I, so, I felt my kids should never be affected.”
They’re both happy doing ‘The Penthouse Live Reunion Concert’ as this is where it all started. I wouldn’t have met Pops and have a beautiful family if not for ‘Penthouse Live’.”
Martin recalls that “Penthouse Live” started with Merce Henares as host. He was just a replacement when he went abroad. “They want someone who’s Ingglisero. But I didn’t even know who our guests are. Imagine, Christopher de Leon guesting in the show and me asking, ‘What’s your name please?’ And he was at the peak of his career then. Also, I have no co-host. They tried different girls each Sunday, until Pops came and that was it! That was the team. The combination that they were looking for! But at that point, I was seeing Jackielou and Pops was with Randy Santiago. Our chemistry ni Pops was not forced, was not staged, it was natural! Lagi kaming nagkokontrahan, we do not agree on anything, but that was great television!”
Watch them re-live “Penthouse Live” once more at their reunion on December 12, 8 PM, at PICC Plenary Hall. For tickets, call DSL Office at 659-3474, 0918-5633781
