FOR A NEW WRITER-director, Zig Dulay achieved quite a feat in “M, My Mother’s Name”, which won the Special Jury Prize at the Metro Manila Filmfest New Wave Section, plus the best actress award for Zsa Zsa Padilla and the best supporting actress award for Gloria Sevilla. He wants to thank Atty. Joji Alonso of Quantum Films for trusting and giving him the chance in bankrolling the movie even if he’s a newcomer. He first worked for Atty. Joji as a scriptwriter. He wrote “Posas” for her, a Cinemalaya entry that won best picture at the Hanoi Filmfest in 2012, and “Ekstra, The Bit Player” that won several best actress awards for Gov. Vilma Santos.
“M, My Mother’s Maiden Name” is based on Zig’s own relationship with his own mom. They live in Isabela and he has lost touched with his mom after he lived and worked in Manila. But when his mom got a terminal illness, he went home and got to know more about her. In “M”, Nico Antonio plays a son, also gay like Zig, who is not close to his mom, Zsa Zsa Padilla. But when his mom gets afflicted with the big C, they become closer with each other.
Now, Zig has another drama project that is part of the new Sinag Maynila Filmfest that will be shown in March. The title is “Bambanti (Scarecrow)” and it stars two good actresses, Alessandra de Rossi and Shamaine Buencamino, plus child actor Micko Laurente. This is another work of his that’s worth looking forward to. Meantime, don’t miss “M, My Mother’s Maiden Name” that’s now showing in selected theatres.
