INSTEAD OF having a presscon, ABS-CBN held a press preview of “FlordeLiza”. Jolina Magdangal and Marvin Agustin play their most mature roles to date as illicit lovers. Marvin as Capt. Crisanto is married to Desiree del Valle who lives in Manila with their daughter Liza (Rhed Bustamante). He’s assigned to fight rebels in Abra and he has a second family there, Jolens, and they also have a daughter, Flor (Ashley Sarmiento).
Jolens is a nurse and knows she’s the other woman. She has accepted this and has no intention of snatching Marvin away from Desiree. She and Marvin are shown kissing lips to lips for the first time and they end up in a post-coital scene with Marvin shirtless and Jolens covering her chest with a blanket. You can never expect them to do such a provocative scene during their heydays as teen stars. Their fans were invited to the special screening and they were all shrieking with delight during the romantic scenes of their idols.
When the story starts, Marvin’s having two wives is already established. It seems he fell for Jolens in Abra because Desiree cannot leave Manila to join him there. This is because Desiree has a big problem with her family. Her dad (Juan Rodrigo) is sick and she pays for his hospital bills. Her mom (Elizabeth Oropesa), elder brother (Edward Mendes) and younger (Lemuel Pelayo) all depend on her for their needs. Edward is a parasite who refuses to work even if he’s already married. She’s also sending Lemuel to college. She has her own business making fish crackers but this was razed in a fire and she has to start all over again.
Actually, Desiree’s role as the wife seems more challenging and ‘markado’ than that of Jolens. She has several big emotional scenes and the audience gave her a big round of applause for she’s really quite effective as the addled wife. In the flashback scenes, Jolens is shown as a provinciana who gets attracted to the dashing soldier than Marvin is and flirts with him even if she knows he’s already married.
A big conflict ensues when Marvin is abducted by the rebels led by Arnold Reyes. He is tortured and his own brother, Kiko Matos, who’s with the rebels, is ordered to shoot him. But Jolens’ friend, Carlo Aquino, helps the military to locate Marvin’s whereabouts and he is rescued. He suffers from post traumatic stress disorder because of his being tortured. His daughter Flor also experiences this (“natulala”) as she personally saw how her dad was mauled and kidnapped by the rebels. Since Desiree doesn’t know about her, Jolina then applies as a housemaid in Manila to be able to personally take good care of Marvin who doesn’t even recognize her. As you can see, the material is really meant for teleserye fans who enjoy watching this kind of melodrama. We’re sure they’ll not complain and even like it.
In all fairness, the stars all act well, especially the child actresses who play the title roles. Also in the cast are Tetchie Agbayani as Jolens’ mother, Nikki Valdez and Johan Santos as the best friends of Jolens and Marvin. Director Wenn Deramas knows his target market quite well and we’re certain they will lap this up. Jolens herself sings the show’s theme song “Kapag Ako ay Nagmahal” which was first used in their movie, “Labs Kita Okay Ka Lang”. “Flordeliza” will start airing on Monday after “Showtime” to be pitted against GMA-7’s toprating soap “The Half Sisters” which will soon celebrate its first anniversary.
