DIEHARD FANS of Ate Guy who are asking what will happen to her now that TV5 has chosen not to renew her contract need not worry because their idol still has three new films in the can.
First is “Padre de Pamilya” where she co-stars with Coco Martin, Rosanna Roces, Joel Torre, Joem Bascon, Anita Linda, Baron Geisler and Miles Ocampo, written and directed by Adolf Alix.
Then there’s “Whistleblower (Ang Silbato)”, also directed by Adolf Alix but written by Rody Vera, co-starring with Angelica Panganiban, Cherry Pie Picache, Cogie Domingo, Rosanna Roces, Anita Linda, Bernardo Bernardo, Liza Lorena, Ina Feleo and Gerald Madrid.
The last is “Taklob (Yolanda)”, filmed in Tacloban and directed by Brilliante Mendoza, co-starring Julio Diaz, Lou Velosa, John Rendez and Ruby Ruiz.
Her followers are also debating as for which of the two movies she did last year should she be nominated as best actress, “Hustisya” or “Dementia”. Our personal choice is “Hustisya” where she has a more difficult role as Biring, the provinciana who transitions from being a simple errand girl to being a crime lord, and she gave justice to it. Up to now, we can still recall that film’s cryptic ending where she is shown laughing like a hyena.
But truth be told, the best performance Nora Aunor gave this year is in “When I Fall in Love”. For once, in that movie, she doesn’t play the role of a poor heroine always dressed simply like in “Kuwento ni Mabuti”, “Thy Womb” and her other recent films. She was the wife of a doctor, Tirso Cruz III, who’s always well dressed in every scene. And she truly gave an impressive performance as the wronged wife who forgave her erring husband and even raised his illegitimate son. But unfortunately it was not released in theatres as it was only shown on TV5 as a TV movie so Ate Guy is not eligible for nomination in film award giving bodies.
Now, it’s up to avid Noranians to drum up support for Ate Guy’s new movies so it will perform better at the tills than her last two films. It’s on TV that she doesn’t have any new assignment. If the shows she did on TV5 turned out to be top drawers in the rating game, then we’re sure she’d be besieged with more offers now. But it looks like television is for the young, which is why the networks are always on the lookout for new stars to discover as they’re the lifeblood of the industry where fans continually clamor for new faces to idolize.
