DAVID POMERANZ is in town. He celebrated his birthday on February 9 on the plane that flew him to Manila and he then gave free concerts for his Filipino fans, first at Subic on Feb. 12 and then at Rizal Park on Feb. 14. “The Valentine concert is very memorable,” he says. “More than 15,000 people came. I also got to take my wife and teenage son to Boracay.”
One of the most prolific hit makers today, he now releases his greatest hits album from PolyEast Records. David gave quite a good show during its launch and also sang a rousing new song dedicated to his wife and 13-year old son. He has made so many hits, among them “Got to Believe in Magic” and “King and Queen of Hearts” that were sang in the hit 1982 movie, “Zapped”, starring Scott Baio (remade by Disney as a TV movie last year.)
“Most people think I wrote those songs since it’s so identified with me, so I just want to make it clear that I wasn’t the one who wrote them,” he says. “I just sang them. They were written by Charles Fox who did the music for the movie.”
These two modern classics for people in love are now included in his “Greatest Hits” album, along with our personal favorite, “Born for You”, which also happens to be David’s own favorite from all the songs he has written. Other great cuts in the album are “On This Day”, “The OId Songs”, “Until I Fall in Love Again”, “Undying Admiration”, “Trail of Broken Dreams”, “Tell Me”, “If you Walked Away” (duet with Sharon Cuneta), “Tryin’ to Get the Feeling Again” (which he did for Barry Manilow) and “Devoted to You”. There’s a new composition in the album that is David’s carrier single, “Crazy Beautiful”.
We tell David that a new local movie about to be shown is titled “Crazy Beautiful You”. “Yes, so I’ve heard,” he says. “What a coincidence.”
“Crazy Beautiful” is a sweet love song about a man who pays tribute to the woman he loves and we can see it becoming a favorite wedding song in the future, just like his “On This Day” and “Born for You” (the album of which scored ten times Platinum in Asia). This will be the ideal song to be played for the bride as she marches towards the altar.
David is one of the foreign celebs who held a concert for the benefit of Yolanda victims. His last album was “Now and Forever”, a collection of cover versions of songs which he wished he himself had written, like the title track that is an Air Supply Original.
Born and raised in New York’s Long Island, David now lives with his family in Clearwater, Florida, which is near Tampa, as he is a member of the Church of Scientology and studies in its big campus there where he meets other Scientologists like Tom Cruise, John Travolta and wife Kelly Preston. “Their courses help us set our goals and attain our dreams,” he says.
He has also written a new song for a new animated movie, “Max and Me”, about a Catholic priest who makes an act of supreme sacrifice in a concentration camp. The title of the song is “Here in My Heart” and will be sung by Ann Wilson.
