90's Singer Jo Awayan Returns From The U.S. To Do 'Legends Rock' At Hard Rock Cafe, Admits She Had A Same Sex Marriage In The States

JO AWAYAN made a name for herself as one of our popular singers in the 90s and she has her regular followers in Cosmo Bar in Annapolis, Greenhills. She left for the U.S. in 2002 with her longtime partner (a well known actress that time who she doesn’t want to be named.) She first performed at the Library comedy bar in San Francisco. “But soon, umiikot na ako all over the U.S. with other artists,” she says.

What happened to her actress partner? “We parted ways but I’m now with my new partner, Angie, with whom I had a same sex marriage seven years ago. We put up our own company, Anjo Productions, and we produce small shows booking Filipino talents. Our last show starred Florante. Nakakarating kami hanggang East Coast in New York.”

She’s now back in Manila. “Someone offered kasi to produce a homecoming concert for me in Zirkoh Bar noong April 26 with Chad Borja, Rannie Raymundo and Anna of Fire. Grabe, napuno namin and it was like Cosmo all over again. Now, Bing Palad Apolinario, asked me to participate in the ‘Legends Rock’ concert at Hard Rock Cafe Makati on Thursday, May 14. I will host the show and also perform with rock legends like Mike Hanopol and Wally Gonzalez of Juan de la Cruz Band, Resty Fabunan of Maria Cafra, Rene Garcia of Hotdog. So how can I resist? These guys are my idols and I’m so proud to be performing with these legends.”


Will she and her partner Angel be staying here for good? “No, we’re flying back to the U.S. on July 7. May commitments pa ako roon. But the ‘Legends Rock’ concert is something rock fans should not miss. I will be doing a mash up of Queen and Sampaguita songs. Rene will do Hotdog hits like ‘Manila’, ‘Bongga Ka Day’, ‘Ikaw ang Miss Universe’ and ‘Annie Batungbakal’. Resty will do hits like ‘Kumusta Mga Kaibigan’ and ‘Buhay Gapo’ while sina Mike and Wally will do hits of Juan de la Cruz. So don’t miss our show at Hard Rock this coming Thursday night at 8 PM.”

Jo has always been very open about her sexual preference and she has had love affairs with some top actresses then. She’s happy that while she’s here, “The Rich Man’s Daughter”, is being shown. “Nakakatuwa nga, mas open na sila ngayon sa ganyan,” she beams. “I’ll really try to watch that show.”
