CARLOS MORALES is writing and directing his first movie, "Piring (Blindfold)", an entry in the Filipino New Cinema World Premieres Filmfest that runs in SM Cinemas from June 24 to July 7, and he is using his real name, Craig Woodruff Jr. "Carlos will be my name as an actor," he says. "But as a filmmaker, mas gusto kong makilala ko using my real name."
So how does he find directing? "Siempre, mas mahirap kasi as an actor, yung role mo lang ang pinoproblema mo. But as a director, responsible ka for every aspect of the movie, from the actual shoot hanggang post-production. Kung hindi mo magustuhan ang acting ng mga artista mo, you have to guide them pa. But it's very fulfilling to make a movie, lalo't ako rin ang sumulat ng script nito. This is a story of survival at inspiration ko ang mga mahihirap na tao sa ating bansa na nami-meet ko kapag may shoot or taping ako sa squatter areas. Lahat sila, nagsisikap lumaban sa hirap ng buhay."
Does this mean he is leaving acting? "No, siempre, first love ko pa rin yun. I just want to express my own creativity as a filmmaker. I'm really thankful nabigyan ako ng break na magdirek ng producer naming si Vice Gov. Bonz Dolor of Mindoro."
"Piring" stars newcomer Yussef Esteves, who has done supporting roles in TV soaps. Carlos got him after an audition. "He plays James, a poor guy na breadwinner para sa dysfunctional family nila with his mother, si Tessie Tomas, an ex-prostitute, at sa mga kapatid niyang sina Rocky Salumbides at Krista Miller. He works as a gym instructor but also studies at night. Sa school nila, na-in love sa kanya yung president, si Bembol Roco, who's a discreet gay. He rejects Bembol at dahil doon, magiging komplikado ang buhay niya dahil sisirain siya nito."
