NIKKI BACOLOD feels so blessed to be chosen by Malaysian songwriter-record producer Julfekar Ahmad Shah, of Julfekar Music based in Selangor, to do an album, "2 Voices", with Malaysian singer Min Yasmin. "Four years in the making ang album," says Nikki at the album launch. "2011 when they first got in touch with me tapos, pabalik-balik ako sa Malaysia to record the album."
How come she's been missing from showbiz? Her last show was "Diyosa" on ABS-CBN? "Kasi I went back to college. I'll graduate this October as marketing management major in La Salle."
How's her stay in Malaysia? "I love their food. They're all very friendly and made me feel at home. Min Yasmin was like a big sister to me and took really good care of me. Lagi akong pinapakain. Our album has two Malay songs, two English songs, and the rest are in Tagalog. She taught me how to pronounce the Malay lyrics correctly and I taught her naman the Tagalog words."
Their carrier single, "Sa Iyo', is now enjoying good airplay on radio and is in the top ten in hit charts. Min Yasmin will be staying here in Manila for one month to promote their album on radio, TV and mall shows. She is known as the Soundtrack Queen in Malaysia as she often sings the theme songs of their TV dramas and movies. She says Nikki did well singing in Malay.
"Malaysians like her and they follow us in social media," she says. Is she married? "I'm single, but no longer available," she laughs.
How does she like Filipino men? "Very guwapo. They show Filipino dramas in Malaysia and my favorite is Dingdong Dantes, but unfortunately, he's already married to Marian Rivera. They're very popular in Malaysia."
Does she know Carmen Soo, a Malaysian actress who did some TV shows here? "Yes, but she's not really popular there."
We ask Mr. Julfekar why he produced an album with a Pinay and a Malaysian singer. "I'm half Filipino as my mother is a Tausug from Mindanao," he says. "I believe in the talent of Filipinos as a music artist and I want to help introduce Filipino talents in Asia. '2 Voices' is a collaboration album between two women of different countries and cultures but together, they make very beautiful music. Later on, my partners and I want to also produce movies and telecines with Filipino talents."
The 11 songs in the album are Ang Tanging Dasal, Back To Me, Laging Nagmamahal Sa Iyo, Sayang Naman, Lafazkanlah, Fairy Tails, Di Na Ako Luluha Pa, Yakap, Satu Hati Dua Jiwa, Sana’y May Bukas Pa, Pusong Duguan and Narito Ako where Nikki duets with Julfekar himself. "2 Voices" is released in the Philippines by PolyEast Records.
