DENNIS TRILLO has played a lot of challenging roles before, like his role as the kept woman of a Japanese officer in “Aishite Imasu” that won him his first acting awards, and as the straight-acting gay lover in “My Husband’s Lover”. But he now considers playing the title role of “Felix Manalo”, the biopic on the founder of Iglesia ni Cristo, as his most demanding role to date.
“It’s not easy to play a real person,” he says. “Lalo na someone like Felix Manalo who founded a new religion.”
So how did he prepare for the role? “If the person were alive, it’d be easier to portray him on screen kasi you can interview him and get actual pointers from him. But Felix Manalo passed in 1963 pa, so I had to read about him, study his life, his work and I talked to the people who have known him when was alive. In the process, nakilala ko siya at nagkaroon ako ng paghanga at respeto sa kanya. It also helped that our director is Joel Lamangan kasi comfortable na ako sa kanya after working with him in several films like ‘Aishite Imasu’ and ‘Blue Moon’.”
“Felix Manalo” had a successful premiere at Philippine Arena last rainy Sunday afternoon. It opens this Wednesday in theaters nationwide. Aside from this, Dennis also plays the title role in the hit GMA primetime drama, “The Faithful Husband”, where he’s paired with Jennylyn Mercado. The loudest whisper is that they’ve reconciled while taping for the show but, at the presscon of Jen’s new movie, “The PreNup”, she denied it and said she’s not in a relationship with anyone at this point. How does he feel about it?
“Totoo namang we are not really committed to each other. But we are happy where we are now. Basta walang label ang relationship namin sa ngayon, so bahala na ang mga tao kung ano ang gusto nilang isipin.”
