THE QUEZON CITY INTERNATIONAL Pink Filmfest formally opened last night, October 6, at Gateway Mall in Cubao, with Mayor Herbert Bautista in attendance. The opening film was “Dressed as a Girl”, a perky docu about London’s exciting drag scene with personal stories of individuals who dress up to shock the world. This was followed by Kanakan Balintagos’ well crafted “Esprit de Corps” that won its star, Sandino Martin, a best actor award.
Today, the featured films are “52 Tuesdays” at 4:30 PM (an Aussie film by Sophie Hyde about a mother undergoing gender transition and her relationship with her teen daughter who she meets every Tuesday), “Kumu Hina” at 7 PM (about the struggles of Hina, a transgender native Hawaiian teacher) and “Breaking Free” at 9:30 PM (an eye-opening docu about the brutal victimization of lesbians, gays and transgenders in India directed Sridhar Rangayan).
Scheduled on Thursday are “Grace” at 4:30 PM (about a Filipina named Grace who went to work in Israel 20 years ago, married an Israeli man, had three sons, then rediscovered her sexuality and entered into a relationship with another Filipina), “Shunned” at 7 PM (a docu by Janice Villarosa about a group of Transwomen in the Philippines as they compete in a gay pageant and find strength in their convictions and in one other) and “Esoterika Manila” (Elwood Perez’ second movie in a trilogy about the creative process, starring singer Ronnie Liang in his first starring role as a graphic artist who has an affair with transgenders).
