DEREK RAMSAY is busy shooting two new films, “Love is Blind” with Solenn Heussaff for Regal Entertainment and “All You Need is Pag-ibig” with Kris Aquino for Star Cinema, but he also has a new TV show to host on TV5, “Tough and Rough”. Its motto is “We never quit. We never give up.” It’s the country’s first international Obstacle Course Racing (OCR) series that will feature a select group of contestants going through grueling tests of individual courage and endurance. The partnership between the Kapatid Network and Tough X Rough (TxR) was announced at a presscon held at the NBA Café at SM Aura in Bonifacio Global City last Wednesday.
Tough X Rough is patterned after military-type commando training and includes eight race events – 3 short course and 4 long course, 4 boot camps and 1 National Championship, with the overall winner for Male and Female individual, as well as top Male and Female Teams, earning a free trip to the OCR World Championships at the Blue Mountain Resort, the largest mountain resort in Ontario, Canada on October 15 and 16.
The inaugural event of the Tough Mudder-inspired race, will be a short course at Intramuros in Manila in March and it is expected to draw at least 1,000 participants. Qualifiers would be held in various parts of the country that includes Subic, Pampanga and Bohol.
TV Sports Head Chot Reyes described the only OCR World Championship Qualifier in Asia as a pioneering effort for the network and is a good team building activity and even hinted they would invite basketball players from various to take part. “It is more than just a race… it’s about experience, hard work, perseverance, teamwork and the sense of community”, he says.
Rod Nepomuceno, TV5 Head of Sales, adds that the series of races will form the basis of a reality show for the network and will center on two aspects: the series of races and selected competitors that will include athletes, celebrities and ordinary individuals with inspiring storylines.
If you want to join, registration opens on Thursday and rates begin at P999 and will have individual and team categories. Each TrX participant will get a TXR Finisher Dog Tag, Race Visor, Work Out Towel, an event day wrist band, a Combat Pack, 10% off the next race and an ice cold Finish Line Beer.

Going back to his movie with Kris, Derek is just a replacement for QC Mayor Herbert Bautista. How does he feel about it?
“No problem,” he says. “I don’t mind at all. That also happened to me before sa Metro-Manila Filmfest entry ko last year, ‘English Only, Please’. I was also not the first choice but I did it and it turned out to be a blessing as I even won a best actor award and the movie also became a big hit. I never thought I would have a filmfest entry this year but heto, dumating, kusang ibinigay sa akin, so okay, I will just do my job well because I know we have a good project.”
He was romantically linked to Kris sometime ago, so there’s a possibility they would be linked again to help promote their movie which also stars Jodi Sta. Maria and Ian Veneracion. “Palagi namang ganun, di ba? So I suppose it can’t be helped, but then, maybe this is our chance to prove that we can just work together without being linked to each other. Makikita ng mga tao na magkaibigan lang talaga kami.”
Well, to begin with, everyone knows Derek is already taken as he currently has a non-showbiz girlfriend named Joanne Villablanca and he’s been quoted saying that he wants this relationship to be “for life”.
