NEW SINGER EDWARD BENOSA is still ecstatic for having won the best new recording artist award at the recent Star Awards for Music where he won over some other talented newcomers, including The Voice Kids runner-up Darren Espanto. He was also nominated in the MOR Awards, where he was up against both male and female artists (all nominated in the same category) that included eventual winner Morissette Amon.
In the wake of his Star Awards victory, there were a few who questioned his winning. Some even asked, “Sino siya? Di namin siya kilala.” But the reactions are generally positive.
Edward is the 6th of 7 kids of a Spanish dad and a Pinay mom. “Second family kami,” he reveals. “Ang family name ng dad ko is Perez but I got the surname of my mom, Benosa, kasi hindi sila legally married. Our dad died when I was only 6 years old at yung bunso namin, pinaampon na lang sa isang family sa abroad kasi hirap na hirap ang mom ko working as manicurist and laundry woman. Former actress Vivian Lorraine is my dad’s sister kaya yung daughter niya, Kristine Garcia, is my cousin. But nasa abroad na yata sila ngayon, e.”
He turned 24 on April 7 and is now managed by Arnold Reyes who composed a song for him, “Di Man Lang Nagpaalam” that’s the carrier single of his debut album with Star Music and was a hit on radio. He himself writes songs and two of his compositions, “Paglisan” and “Why Didn’t You Stay”, are also in his album. How come they’re sad songs? “I wrote them kasi after I just broke up with my girlfriend. As of now, focus muna sa career ko. No lovelife muna.”
Good looking enough to be an actor, he got his first taste of acting in the STAGES play “Chuva Choo Choo”, which is based on the hit songs of noted composer Vehnee Saturno. He co-starred with Joanna Ampil and Morisette Amon. It was shown briefly a few months ago but will have an extended run next year. Later on, he wants to try acting in a teleserye. He already has his own fans club, the Edward Benosa Loyal Supporters.
He believes having an album, a hit song and an award in so short a time is nothing short of a miracle. “It’s really incredible kasi it was only nine months ago when I did my album. When I was younger, I auditioned sa Starstruck at sa PBB, but hindi ako nakuha. So hindi pa lang siguro time. But this year is really memorable for me and things seem to be falling in the right places. Noong awards night, I went without expecting anything kasi alam kong bago pa lang ako, so when my name was called, I was so shocked. Onstage, I forgot to thank so many people, including my manager. Di ko kasi talaga in-expect. Sobra akong nagulat. But I’m very grateful as winning the award definitely gives my career a big boost. Incentive din at enough reason para ipagpatuloy ko itong ginagawa ko, ipagpatuloy ang sinimulan ko. Napaka-gandang Christmas gift nito galing kay Lord at sana magtuloy-tuloy hanggang sa bagong taong 2016.”
