JOHN LLOYD CRUZ will no doubt be proclaimed Box Office King of 2015 for the megahit “A Second Chance” which grossed P550 million. And Bea Alonzo, as his partner, will be the Box Office Queen. But his next release after “Second Chance”, the filmfest entry “Honor Thy Father”, proved that JLC cannot stand alone at the box office. He needs a good ka-love team like Bea or Sarah Geronimo for moviegoers to flock to his movies.
His fans also don’t want to see him in a serious dark drama where his face even got disfigured by irate church goers who ruthlessly beat him up in a violent scene. He was probably hoping that the movie will work for him the way it did for Joel Torre and Joey Marquez who all won acclaim and acting awards for their performance in Director Erik Matti’s previous movie, “On the Job”.
But OTJ is a much more solid and polished piece of work than HTF, so it’s no wonder that it got accepted at the Cannes Filmfest and HTF was not. Also, he would have won best actor in the Metro filmfest if Jericho Rosales did not appear in “Walang Forever”. No doubt Jericho did a much more emotionally affecting performance in this movie in a role that is much more lovable and relatable than that of JLC in HTF.
