ACE RAPPER GLOC-9’s song, “Pareho Tayo” that was free to download and listen to online, has been acquired by Atty. Rico Quicho, spokesman of VP Jojo Binay, through PPL Entertainment a month after its release. It will be remembered that at the press conference launching the single in early January, Gloc-9 was asked about how this song seemed to parallel with the campaign slogan of Vice Mayor Isko Moreno, something that he had also read from some of his Twitter followers.
Asked about who he was voting for, Gloc-9 answered that he has yet to choose who to vote for, but that a major factor would be a platform for healthcare. One media stalwart whispered: that sounds like Grace Poe, doesn’t it? Listening to “Pareho Tayo,” any politician would have been smart to acquire the song for his or her campaign. After all, the song speaks about the impoverished and difficult state of the nation that all politicians promise to respond to and solve.
Acquiring an existing song for a political campaign is not new in this country. In 2010, Gloc-9’s “Simpleng Tao” was used for Manny Villar’s campaign as acquired through the recording company that owned it. “Bagong Umaga” is a 1996 song by Bayang Barrios that was acquired by the Fernando Poe Jr. campaign in 2004, and which continues to be used by the current campaign of his daughter Senator Poe.
Atty. Rico Quicho heard “Pareho Tayo” soon after its release and went into negotiations with PPL Entertainment in mid-January. The turnover of the rights to the song and music video became effective on February 1, 2016.
Also on February 1, Gloc-9 signed up anew with ABS-CBN Star Music. It was with Star that he first recorded his self-titled CD in 2003, a compilation of songs he had written for different official soundtracks for film, such as “Isang Araw” and “Ayoko Na,” which were used in the movie Trip (produced by Star Cinema), as well as the song “Bakit” (feat. Cooky Chua) which Gloc-9 had written for the Himig Handog Love Songs competition in 2002. His homecoming to Star Music can only be a great opportunity for him to flex his creative muscles with the most productive and innovative recording company in the country. Under a one-year contract, Gloc-9 promises songs that are exciting yet socially relevant, just like we know his songs to be. The first EP entitled Sukli is about to be completed and is truly something to look forward to.
