BARBIE FORTEZA won her first best actress award in an international film festival. This is for the movie “Laut”, where she plays a Badjao maiden transported by poverty from Mindanao to a slum area in Pampanga. The movie was an entry in the 38th Fantasporto International Filmfest held last week at Oporto, Portugal.
When we asked Barbie then if she’d join the local delegation to Portugal, she said: “Even if I want to join them, parang it’s not possible because I am taping three times a week for the primetime rom-com on GMA-7 with Andre Paras, ‘That’s My Amboy’.”
Maybe, had she known that she’d win best actress, she’d take time out to attend the filmfest in person. This is her third acting award. She first won a FAMAS best child actress award for “Puntod” and a Cinemalaya best supporting actress award for “Mariquina”. “First time kong mag-win ng best actress, sa ibang bansa pa,” she says. “What a big blessing. Salamat kay Lord.”
Directed by Louie Ignacio (who also gave two international best actress awards to Aiko Melendez for “Asintado”), “Laut”, which delves on the sad plight of our uprooted indigenous people, is produced by Mrs. Baby Go of BG Productions. Both Louie and Mrs. Go were present at Portugal to receive the award for Barbie. The movie also won the Special Mention Jury Prize in the said filmfest. Congratulations. It also stars Anna Capri, Jak Roberto, Perla Bautista and Gabbi Garcia.
