RURU MADRID and Gabbi Garcia feel so fortunate to be chosen as the stars of GMA Public Affairs’ coming romantic comedy to be shown before the May presidential elections, “Naku, Boss Ko!”. Written by Rody Vera and Sid Dulay, it’s directed by Marlon Rivera. The show is actually a political satire that lampoons the shenanigans of most politicians come each election time.
“As I was reading the script, I got so surprised kasi maraming politikong tatamaan dito,” says Ruru. “Siempre, hindi naman namin pinapangalanan, but I’m sure they will recognize themselves.”
“Totoong-totoo ang mga sitwasyong inilalarawan dito,” says Gabbi. “Nakakatawa pero may sundot lalo na when it comes to corrupt politicians who’ll do everything just to get elected.”
They’re both teenagers but will play characters who are 20 something in the story. Ruru is Jojo, a young man who becomes famous when a video showing him saving a child from a fire becomes viral on the net. People start looking up to him as a hero. “Dahil dito, I was chosen to run for mayor in our town. Ang mga kalaban ko are sina Jao Mapa, na isang mabait at matinong kandidato, at si Love Anover, na siyang current corrupt mayor.”
Gabbi plays Che, a student activist who crosses paths with Ruru. “Maganda yung character ko. Simple lang but street smart, hindi ko mo maloloko. Nahirapan kami rito ni Ruru kasi nga it’s a comedy. E nasanay kami sa drama, so we have to adjust in doing comic scenes. It’s good inalalayan kami ni Direk Marlon sa aming pagpapatawa.”
“Puro comedians ang kasama namin dito kaya masaya sa set, kulitan,” adds Ruru. “Playing my father is Leo Martinez, na ilang beses nang kumandidato pero laging talo. My mentor who teaches me about politics is Tessie Tomas. Kasama rin namin sina Jackie Rice as a movie star na mali-link sa akin, Glenda Garcia as Gabbi’s mom and sina Gene Padilla and Divine Aucina of ‘Dear Uge’.”
Are they spending this Holy Week together? “Ay, hindi po,” says Gabbi. “I will be with my grandparents in Cavite.” “Kami naman po ng family ko, pupunta sa Marinduque,” says Ruru.
So what’s the status of their relationship now off cam? “Good friends pa rin,” says Gabbi. “We’re happy to work together again kasi yung last show namin, ‘Let the Love Begin’, was six months ago pa. Ang tagal na rin, di ba? Kaya nga the fans of our love team keep on asking kung kailan kami babalik. So heto, babalik na kami kaya sana panoorin nila sa April. It will be shown before ‘Saksi’, the late evening newscast. We promise it will be a lot of fun.”
