Thanking The Lord As We Celebrate Our 40th Anniversary As An Entertainment Writer

WE STARTED writing about local showbiz in 1976. So we celebrate this year our 40th year as an entertainment writer. It was Rod Reyes who invited us to write movie reviews for his magazine then, “TV Guide”. We feel so blessed because 1976 is such a bountiful year in local movies. There were so many good movies shown that year that we all got to review: Ishmael Bernal’s “Nunal sa Tubig” and “Ligaw na Bulaklak”, Lino Brocka’s “Insiang” and “Lunes Martes Miyerkules…”, Mike de Leon’s “Itim”, Mario O’Hara’s “Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos”, Eddie Romero’s “Ganito Kami Noon, Paano Kayo Ngayon”, Lupita Concio’s “Minsan Isang Gamo-Gamo”. Thay year has yet to be duplicated in terms of prodigious output.

From “TV Guide”, we also started writing reviews for then well known martial law broadsheets, “Times Journal” and “Philippines Daily Express”. In 1978, the late Fred Marquez, editor of People’s Tonight, invited us to write a column for him and we wrote the column “Puna’t Puri” in Taglish. He also asked us to write a column in their magazine, Parade, “Give na Give”. When the late Giovanni Calvo left People’s Journal, our afternoon column was transferred to the morning edition as “Puna’t Puri”.

Then Jingle Extra Hot of Gilbert Guillermo contacted us in 1979 and also asked us to write reviews for them. In 1983, the late Mar D’Guzman Cruz put up “Movie Flash” in GASI (Graphic Arts) and we left Jingle to write for him. Fan magazines were booming at that time and during its heydays, GASI published a total of 8 fanzines each week and we were writing a column in all of them. This at a time when we were just using an old rickety Remington manual typewriter and we have to physically deliver your column to all the publications we write for. It was so time consuming and looking back, we just can’t understand how we did it all!

Now, after 40 years, we’re still here, our work simplified a lot by technology, still loving the kind of job that we do, writing about stars and reviewing movies. We are really so blessed to do something we really enjoy doing. Some people have retired at our age. But we’re still here. Still an active and productive senior citizen. Thank God for this wonderful blessing for the past 40 years. He is the only One who is in control and everything is grace.
