KATE BRIOS, an Ilongga producer-actress, seems to have a mission of making movies out of Iloilo urban legends on aswangs. She first made a movie out of “Maria Labo”, a beautiful lass allegedly raped by several men and turned into an aswang. Now, she’s all set to show “Teniente Gimo”, about a teniente del barrio who has many more colorful stories.
Some say he’s from the town of Dingle in Iloilo, but other say he’s actually from Duenas. A daughter of his invited two friends to sleepover in their house and discovered one of them will be eaten by Gimo’s clan of aswangs. She heard she’s the one chosen but she exchanged places with Gimo’s own daughter so it his own daughter that Gimo and his aswangs get to kill.
Now, Kate’s KIB Productions and Viva Films will be showing their movie version of this horror story, “Teniente Gimo, Ang Aswang Man, May Hugot Din”, directed by Roland M. Sanchez, an NBI investigator. Gimo is played by award-winning actor John Regala and playing his daughter is Eliza Pineda as Ella. But she is given a love interest instead, Joshua Dionisio as Victor. Also in the cast are Julio Diaz (before his stroke), Mon Confiado, Suzette Ranillo, and Kate Brios herself playing an important role. This will open in theaters on Wednesday, June 1.
Kate partnered with Roi Vinzon when she did “Maria Labo”, which was shown last November and had Pres.elect Digong Duterte as the special guest at its premiere night as he’s a good friend of Kate. Now, Roi has filed a libel case against her because she allegedly accused him in social media of taking advantage of her when she gave him P2.5 million to produce “Maria Labo”, which he directed. Roi says it’s also his idea to film “Teniente Gimo”, but Kate denies this and says the movie is based on a serialized radio program.
But Kate said she actually spent P6 million for “Maria Labo” just for the movie to be released in theaters. She says she enough evidence about this and she plans to also file a case of estafa against Roi, who’s now part of GMA-7’s new sitcom, “A1 Ko Sa’yo”, playing the role of a closet queen.
Roi filed his libel case against Kate in his native Pampanga, so Kate, in turn, will file her case against him in her native Bacolod. Her lawyer is Duterte’s spokesman, Atty. Sal Panelo. Well, we just hope that this is not just a gimmick between Kate and Roi to help drum up publicity for “Teniente Gimo” as there is no doubt that the case will help for the new movie to be talked about.
