DIRECTOR MIKO LIVELO of “I Love You to Death” wants to thank Regal Entertainment for giving him the break to do a mainstream movie. Prior to this, he has directed an indie film for Cinema One, “Blue Bustamante”, which starred Joem Bascon and Dimples Romana. It was partly filmed on location in Japan. However, it failed to make waves.
Miko turned 30 years old last November 13. He has a fine arts degree from UST and was also a film scholar at the Asia Pacific Film Institute. He has previously made a short film for Q Cinema, “Sa Ngalan ni Ultimate Warrior”, and is currently directing the Online sitcom on the Digital5 Studio channel, “Tanods”, starring Martin Escudero and Jun Sabayton. So how did he get to direct “I Love You to Death”?
“I took the writing workshop of Direk Jun Lana, Cine Panulat, and became part of the team of his company with Direk Perci Intalan, IdeaFirst,” says Miko. “They told us they’re doing a comedy for Regal and Ash Malalum wrote the script which became ‘I Love You to Death’. I’m glad I was the one chosen by our mentors, Direk Jun and Direk Perci, to direct it.”
What’s the story all about? “Kiray plays Gwen while Enchong is Tonton. They are child sweethearts who pledge they will marry each other someday. But as they were growing up, they lost touch. Then one day, bigla na lang bumalik si Tonton and proposed marriage to Gwen, which she accepts. Days before the wedding, people who are bullying Gwen start to die one by one in horrifying murders. So nandun yung mystery of what Enchong really is.”
So how does he balance doing the elements of comedy and horror in the movie? “Doing the comedy part is easier because Kiray is a very good comedian. It’s the horror part which is more difficult, but we decided na kahit horrific yung murders, kailangang may pagka-comic or campy pa rin ang dating ng mga eksena. I hope magustuhan naman sana ng audience ang treatment namin.”
