Jadine's 'Till I Met You' Clobbered At The Ratings By 'Descendants Of The Sun', Looks Like Viewers Don't Like The Gay Angle

WE THOUGHT THE JaDine love team is a sure winner at the ratings game, but the results of the AGB Nielsen surveys for Mega Manila (where viewership counts the most according to advertisers) seem to indicate the contrary.

The surveys show that from August 30 to September 5, their show “Till I Met You” was edged out in the ratings game by its competitor, the Koreanovela “Descendants of the Sun”. On Aug. 30, “Till” rated 18.5% while “Descendants” got 22.9%.

On Aug. 3l, “Till” got 19% while “Descendants” rated 21.3%. Sept. 1, it’s 19.6 for “Till” and 22.2 for “Descendants”. Sept. 2, “Till” got 19.7 and “Descendants” rated 21.7. On September 5, Monday, “Descendants” went even higher at 25% while “Till” got only 19.4%.

This is probably because the publicity slant gave more importance to the gay love angle between the two lead actors, so it seems that only gay viewers are the ones really enamored watching the show with glee as seen in their comments on social media about JC Santos’ gay love for James Reid. But general audiences don’t seem to be that in favor of this story line as most of the fans of JaDine are young people, unlike “My Husband’s Lover” which catered to more mature audiences. As one kibitzer commented: “Teen love story, bakit pinasukan ng kabaklaan?”

It’s an advantage for “Till I Met You” that “Descendants of the Sun” will be ending this Friday, to be replaced by Dingdong Dantes’ “Alyas Robin Hood”, which became controversial as folks in social media accuse it as an imitation of Stephen Amell’s “Arrow”, which they naturally deny. Let’s see if Dingdong’s action-drama will be able to sustain the high ratings of “Descendants” and continue to edge out “Till I Met You” in the prime time ratings game.

Another ABS-CBN show that rated poorly was “Born for You” as it seems that viewers didn’t warm up to the pairing of Elmo Magalona and Janella Salvador. It was clobbered by its rival, “Juan Happy Love Story”, and the show that replaced it, “Someone to Watch Over Me”. It’s also ending soon, to be replaced by “Magpahanggang Wakas” of Jericho Rosales and Arci Munoz. The only Kapamilya show that is consistently a toprater is Coco Martin’s “Ang Probinsyano”. But lately, even “Encantadia” seems to be edging it out, but only by a very, very slight margin.
