MEGAN YOUNG has the singular distinction of being our country’s first Miss World but one thing you can say about her is she remains the same Megan we first met when she joined Starstruck 2 when she was 14 years old and that was 12 years ago. Success never got into her head.
“Nagbago naman ako kasi I have more confidence now,” she tells us at the presscon of “Alyas Robin Hood”. “Noon kasi, sobrang mahiyain pa ako. I also became a stronger person. Dati oo lang ako ng oo. Now, I can say no. Dati rin, hindi ako palaayos. Lumalabas akong walang make up, naka-baseball cap. Now, they tell me, mag-ayos ka naman, beauty queen ka, e. So I make an effort.”
Does being a Miss World give her some advantages? “Parang wala naman masyado. Just recently, nahuli ako ng pulis so coding, kinuha pa rin ang license ko and I gave it naman kasi I’m a law-abiding citizen.”
She seems to be the favorite of Miss World top exec Julia Morley as she’s always involved in their new pageants, including hosting the recent Mr. World. “Maganda kasi ang naging working relationship namin. She treats me like family and she became my second mom. I don’t know yet what my participation is sa next Miss World. Usually, they inform me about a month na lang before it happens.”
How is it working with Dingdong Dantes in “Alyas Robin Hood”? “It’s not my first time to work with him kasi we were co-hosts sa last Starstruck, but this is the first time we’re acting together. Maganda agad ang naging rapport namin, very natural yung mga batuhan namin ng linya. I play Sarri, a doctor, pediatrician, who helps the less fortunate. He’s a young criminal lawyer naman who also helps the poor. Kaso, naging karibal niya sa akin si Sid Lucero who kills his dad, Christopher de Leon, then frames him up for the murder kaya nabilanggo siya. Maganda yung story at magugustuhan tiyak ng viewers.”
She’s one actress who has gone full circle. She was discovered by GMA-7, moved to ABS-CBN, then to TV5, and now she’s back to be a Kapuso. “Ang saya nga, di ba? It’s nice to be able to meet and work with so many people and networks along the way. I learned a lot from all of them.”
Aside from “Alyas Robin Hood”, she’s also in a new movie, “Our Mighty Yaya”, with Ai Ai de las Alas. “I heard it will be entered daw in the Metro Manila filmfest.”
And we heard she’s doing another movie for Regal, “Recipe for Love”, with Billy Crawford. “Ha? I don’t know yet about that.” But Roselle Monteverde announced it in a recent presscon at Regal. “Baka they’ve told my manager, Arnold Vegafria and I haven’t been officially informed yet.”
She and her BF Mikael Daez continue to travel together. They just posted photos of their trip to Japan. So where are they going next? “We have an upcoming trip to New York.” Which of the places they’ve visited does she like the most? “Tokyo. Sobrang sarap kasi ng food doon and we both love to eat.”
