MAINE MENDOZA is asked if she believes in destiny since this is what her first serious soap with Alden Richards is all about, “Destined to be Yours”? “Of course, naniniwala ako sa destiny kasi ito mismong nangyari sa akin, destiny talaga,” she says. “Kinuha ako sa ‘Eat Bulaga’ para mag-dubsmash as Yaya Dub. Who would have thought na magki-click ang tambalan namin ni Alden Richards doon. So destiny ko talaga na mapunta ako sa showbiz sa tamang panahon kasama ang mga tamang taong tumulong para magka-showbiz career ako.”
This is her debut as a primetime drama actress. Does she feel any pressure? “Yes, pero hindi naman ganun katindi kasi, unang-una, Alden and I are doing this for our fans, the AlDub Nation. So very important for us na magustuhan nila ito. As long as we have their strong support, I’m not really worried about competition. Unang-una, we have something very different to offer. Iba ang story nito sa Kalyeserye at sa movie naming ‘Imagine You and me’. The writer saw to it that we have a fresh new concept at ibang-iba rin ang mga beteranong artistang kasama namin dito. I can promise sa AlDub Nation at sa lahat ng mga Kapuso na hindi sila mabibigo kundi masisiyahan sila sa panonood nito.”
Is she happy with her acting? “I’ll be the first to admit na mas kilala ako sa comedy at naga-adjust pa ko in doing drama scenes. But I’m getting a lot of help from our director, Irene Villamor, our more senior co-stars, and of course, from Alden himself who gives me a lot of valuable tips about acting. Unang-una advice niya is to be at ease, comfortable sa set, sa paligid, at huwag magpapa-distract sa mga nangyayari around us para magawa ko ng tama ang mga eksenang assigned sa akin. Kasi nga naman, kapag parang naiilang ako, it will show at hindi magiging natural ang labas ng character ko.”
Maine plays Sinag and she lives in a provincial town called Pelangi, while Alden is Benjie and he lives in Manila. But although they live so far apart from each other, destiny will have a hand for their characters to meet and fall in love in “Destined to be Yours”.
