RACHEL ARENAS is the new MTRCB chief. A former congresswoman of Pangasinan, she is one of the five children of socialite Baby Arenas. She replaces Atty. Toto Villareal as head of the review and classification board which is composed of 30 members. She’s just two weeks in her position but quickly became controversial when she was quoted that she plasn to get into reviewing shows on cable channels like Netflix.
“Actually, I was misquoted,” she says. “They interviewed me on radio in Pangasinan kung anong gagawin sa pirated DVD’s and I said it’s not under the MTRCB but the Optical Media Board. Tinanong din nila ako about cable channels and I never said I want to regulate it. What I said was they should do self-regulation or be more prudent with the shows and movies na pinalalabas nila.
Siempre, nag-react agad ang mga tao at may nagsabi pa sa akin sa Facebook ng ‘Don’t touch my Netflix.’ May counterparts kami sa ibang bansa na pinag-aaralan na rin yan. Kasi because the advancement in technology is so fast, it’s hard to do cyber police. So I just want to make it clear, hindi yan kasama sa jurisdiction ng MTRCB. I hope they’ll understand. Kung gustuhin man naming mapunta sa amin yan, it’s difficult kasi we have to amend the law. There will be a lot of debates muna kasi it’s sort of a gray area, yung you can watch or download movies on the internet. Nung ginawa kasi ang batas noon, wala pang internet.”
About her personal life, she is single and has no children. Her mom, Baby Arenas, was there and butts in: “She will never get married.”
Does her mom meddle with her lovelife? “Of course, all the time,” says Rachel. “Kung may itatanong kayo sa’kin about that, dapat yung tayo-tayo na lang. I just broke up with my boyfriend.”
And her mom adds: “Of course, mother is always right. Mother knows best.”
