WE HEARD that the camp of Charice Pempengco, who’s now known as Jake Zyrus, is very happy because she’s suddenly very much in the news again and people are talking about her, er, him. Even her own mother and grandmother have joined the fray, being interviewed on TV and making their own statements in social media about her new identity.
Her mom said she cannot do anything but accept Jake for what he is. But her own lola, whose name is Tessie Pineda, says she doesn’t approve of what her apo did and she wants to confront those who “killed” Charice. “May mga nagsulsol lang diyan, e,” she insists.
Her lola also reveals that Jake is no longer wallowing in wealth like before when she was earning millions from doing concerts here and abroad and even doing Hollywood TV shows like “Glee” and movies with the Chipmunks as an international singer. “Nawala na yung mga naipundar niya, naibenta na,” says her lola. “Lahat ng investment niya sa bahay at mga condo niya rito at sa America, nawala na. Nakakatakot na baka bumalik siya sa wala.”
She adds that she never profited from her apo’s huge success abroad. Up to now that she’s 70 years old, she earns her own living by being a “mananahi” or seamstress. Meantime, the news of Charice being Jake Zyrus has also been reported even in US entertainment magazines, which is not surprising since she made a name for herself there. And Charice/Jake is seemingly pleased with all this buzz about her change of screen name.
But the truth remains na maingay lang siya ngayon dahil pinag-uusapan pa siya. Pero in the long run, lilipas din yan and then she’ll go back to oblivion. Does she think her change of name will have a lasting positive effect and revive her career? We doubt it. People disapproved when she announced then that she’s a transman and flaunted her living in with Alyssa Quijano, a singer who she helped then and people predicted correctly na hindi naman tatagal yan. Now, she wants to be called Jake when there are already so many Jakes in showbiz, like Jake Ejercito, Jake Vargas, Jake Roxas, Jake Cuenca, Jake Tordesillas and even Jake Gyllenhaal. All we can say is: good luck!
