HEART EVANGELISTA is so touched at the presscon of her new primetime show when GMA-7 prepared a special video for her acknowledging her 19th year in showbiz, telling her that she will forever be their Jagiya, or darling. She considers it an honor to be chosen by GMA-7 to star in the ground-breaking TV series, “My Korean Jagiya”, the first collaboration between Filipino and Korean stars that is partly shot on location in Seoul, Korea. It will start airing this Monday evening to replace “I Heart Davao” that concludes tonight.
“Ang daming Pinoy fans ngayon ng things Korean, from their music to their Koreanovelas at gustong-gusto ring bumibisita sa famous tourist spots in Korea,” says Heart. “So this endearing romcom is dedicated to them. I play a bubbly girl named Gia, short for Guadalupe Immaculada Asuncion, a Korean grade school tutor na isang hopeless romantic at avid fan ng K-drama. I come from a family of old maids at tinutukso kong ako na ang magiging next old maid sa family namin, but may boyfriend ako of five years, si Edgar Allan Guzman, na akala ko, magpo-propose na sa’kin ng marriage pero may mangyayaring big surprise! Big fan din ako ng isang Korean superstar, si Kim Jun Ho, played by Alexander Lee, at gustong-gusto ko siyang makita nang personal, kaso bigla siyang nawala sa limelight at the height of his career kaya I’m wondering whatever happened to him.”
As luck would have it, she was given by the school where she works the chance to go to Korea on a
scholarship training. “So yun na nga, I fly to Seoul and you’ll see me visit the most beautiful places there where they shot ‘My Love from the Star’, ‘Winter Sonata’, ‘Kim Sam Soon’ and other top K-dramas. Kunsaan hahantong itong pagpapanggap namin, yun ang abangan nyo and I’m sure you’ll fall in love with the story at maraming K-drama fans na makaka-relate dito.”
How is it working with leading man Alexander Lee and the other Korean stars in the show: David Kim, Michelle Oh and Jerry Lee? “They’re all nice and very refreshing. Very polite, very professional, so hardworking. Lahat kaming mga Pinoy sa set, masaya kaming kasama sila kasi never silang nagrereklamo. Si Xander Lee, may pusong Pinoy siya. He’s learning hard how to speak Tagalog. Naging friends agad kami and we have a very good working relationship. Sobrang grateful siya when he celebrated his birthday here in Manila and I hosted a party for him sa aming bahay ni Sen. Chiz. He really appreciates Pinoy hospitality.”
What can she say about some remarks regarding the new house she built that insinuate that it came from what her husband Sen.Chiz Escudero gained in the last election? “You know, that’s really foul because yung house, it really came from my own earnings. We just laugh it off kas everyone knows we signed a prenup and I declare what I make every year, so check na lang nila ang talent fee ko. Hindi kami nagpapakialaman sa earnings ng bawat isa, but when it comes to our everyday expenses, share kami. My husband is a very open minded person and supportive siya sa career ko. I’m working on my own, I act, I have my paintings, so what’s wrong with that?”
So, when will they have their own baby? “Naku, siguro pagkatapos na nitong ‘My Korean Jagiya’ saka kami magpo-focus sa pagbe-baby. Promise yan. We’ll work on it na.”
