JULIA BARRETTO is just like her aunts Gretchen and Claudine who are both quite articulate. At the presscon of “I Love You to the Stars and Back”, there were times when her leading man, Joshua Garcia, seems to be at a loss for words and is having a hard time answering the questions from the press, so Julia would answer for him. When Joshua was asked what’s the current status of their relationship, he replies: “Getting to know each other pa rin po.”
But Julia refutes this. “No, I don’t think so. It’s become deeper than before. We already know each other very well now. But we’re not rushing our friendship. I enjoy his company.”
When asked about his real feelings for Julia, Joshua got tongue tied and Julia eventually had to intervene.
“I’m sorry to butt in in the middle of all this. Personally kasi, when you’re seeing somebody who is special to you, going through something like that, you feel for him,” Julia explains. “So, whatever he’s feeling, I started to feel also. And I am really very protective of Joshua. As much as possible, if I can help him in any way I can, I will help him. Lahat ng pinagdaanan niya alam ko, kaya naiintindihan ko siya. As much as possible, talagang ipagtatanggol ko siya. I’m being very honest right now as he has become such an important person in my life and it’s not like nakakasagabal siya sa trabaho ko.”
Joshua said he stalled because he lacks self confidence. He can’t easily verbalize his real feelings for Julia “kasi I’m afraid of rejection. Natatakot akong magtanong sa kanya ng diretso kung sasagutin niya ako, kasi puede siyang maghindi. Maingat ako, kasi ganun ako pinalaki,” adds the young Batangueno who doesn’t hide the fact that he comes from a broken family.
But he admits that he’s been courting Julia for nine months now, since “Vince Kath James”. “Noong look test pa lang po namin sa VKJ, crush ko na siya.”
And how does Julia feel about this? “Siempre, pinayagan ko siyang manligaw kasi may gusto rin naman talaga ako sa kanya.”
How come there’s a story that Joshua’s family does not approve of Julia? “Hindi po totoo yung hindi siya tanggap ng pamilya ko. Hindi pa nga siya nami-meet ng family ko, so paano mangyayari na hindi sila boto sa kanya? Kaya ko siyang ipaglaban kasi naniniwala akong mabuting tao si Julia.”
Julia says she has not met the family of Joshua who lives in Batangas. “Hindi ko pa sila nakikilala kaya unfair namang gawaan kami ng kuwento when we haven’t even met.”
What is undeniable is that they really have great chemistry on the big screen. In “I Love You to the Stars and Back” that opens in theaters on August 30, Joshua plays Caloy, a young man stricken with leukemia, while Julia is Mika, a girl who wants to be abducted by aliens. They meet each other by chance and together, they embark on roadtrip of self discovery.
This is written and directed by Antoinette Jadaone, who earlier gave us the surprise indie hit, “That Thing Called Tadhana”, also about a young couple who meet each other by accident and take a road trip together to Sagada. So you can expect the same proliferation of hugot lines in “I Love You from the Stars and Back” which was so rampant in “Tadhana”.
