JC SANTOS has a new title: box office star. His “100 Tula Para Kay Stella” is the topgrosser of the recent Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino, grossing P100 million (and counting, as it’s extended in various cinemas). And it’s still on extended run in some theaters.
He now holds the distinction of rescuing Bela Padilla after her last movie, “Luck at First Sight” with a much bigger actor, Jericho Rosales, unfortunately laid a big fat egg at the box office when it was shown a few months ago.
Who would have thought that a movie Bela did with a relatively unknown and more unproven JC Santos would rake it in bigger at the tills than the movie she did with Echo? And now, as we all know, everybody loves a winner, so JC is working on two new films no less, “Meant to Beh, Ika-Something na Utos”, an entry in the coming Metro-Manila Filmfest topbilled by Vic Sotto, Dawn Zulueta, Andrea Torres, among others, directed by Chris Martinez, and “Mr. and Mrs. Cruz” with Viva Films opposie Ryza Cenon, directed by Sigrid Andrea P. Bernardo of “Kita Kita”.
Success didn’t come to JC on a silver platter. He earned his dues. As a theater actor, he toiled hard at the musical presentations in Hong Kong Disneyland and Singapore’s Universal Studios before he came home to Manila and did his first indie film, “Esprit de Corps”, where he had a daring nude scene. Since then, he has starred in many other indie films before hitting it big with his gay character in “Till I Met You”, starring the JaDine love team whose popularity he has now surpassed.
JC says he can identify with his role as the bashful Fidel Lansangan in “100 Tula”. “Like him, mahiyain ako kaya I pursued theater arts in college and that helped me a lot to gain more self confidence. All the things that are happening to me and my career now, nagulat din ako. But I just accept them and thank the Lord for all His blessings.”
