A Bitter Sweet Weekend That Will Be Remembered For The Passing Of Actress Isabel Granada And The Back-To-Back Of Win Of Two Local Beauty Queens In International Pageants

THE PAST WEEKEND will be memorable for happenings that are poles apart. In Doha, Qatar, 41-year old actress Isabel Granada passed due to aneurysm. This is exactly what happened to my own wife Victoria in 2008 who just collapsed after delivering a lecture in UP Los Banos, then quietly left a few days later. Let’s pray for the repose of the soul of Isabel and for the family she left behind to be able to cope with the loss.

In contrast to this sad story, two local beauty queens won international titles. Karen Ibasco is the 4th Pinay to win the Miss Earth title right in her own turf. In Bolivia, Teresita Winwyn Marquez won the Reina HispanicoAmericana. She’s the first Pinay, first Asian to join this largely Latina pageant and it’s to her credit that she bagged it at first try. The footage of her in national costume, swimsuit, long gown are all available in youtube and the one we like the most is the interview portion where she gave a lengthy and intelligent answer.

The question is: "How would you promote Hispanic-American culture with the great difficulty or barrier of language?" She replied through an interpreter. "Language can be learned. But the will and determination to contribute something to the organization cannot. It has to come from the heart and it has to be natural. I believe that kindness is the universal language. If you treat people with tolerance, patience and love, you will understand each other. The Hispanic culture is not about language only. It is about love for God, love for country, love for history and culture, and love for family. And as a Filipina with a unique heritage, I have instilled that. I am ready to promote the Hispanic culture not just in Asia but in the whole world. It is time to celebrate the Hispanic culture. It is meant to be celebrated. Gracias."

Mark Herras, the boyfriend of Winwyn, is understably rejoicing for her win. This is what he posted in his social media account: "OMG!!! Salamat lord!!! Ga!! (Their term of endearment for Pangga.) Wala ako masabi! Congrats pangggaa!!! Ikaw na talaga :) I love you!! Wow ga wow!! We are so proud of you!!!" He later went to the house of Win’s mom, Alma Moreno, for them to celebrate together. Win’s dad, Joey Marquez, is also very proud of her.

To the family of the late Isabel Granada, our condolences. To Karen and Winwyn, Bravo! Mabuhay! We’re proud of you.
