THE GMA NETWORK creative team in charge of their afternoon shows is obviously doing a very good job because, right now, the programs of their Afternoon Prime are really lording it over the ratings game, per AGB Nielsen surveys.
The afternoon show “Ika-6 na Utos” clobbers “It’s Showtime”, while “Impostora” bludgeons “Pusong Ligaw” and “Haplos” makes ‘lampaso’ to “Promise of Forever”. All these shows are basically about women fighting each other (catfights are not uncommon scenes in these dramas) while competing for the attention of one man: Sunshine Dizon vs. Ryza Cenon over Gabby Concepcion, Kris Bernal vs. Kris Bernal over Rafael Rosell, and Sanya Lopez vs. Thea Tolentino over Rocco Nacino. And yet viewers continue to buy them.
The latest results of the AGB Nielsen rating also show that even “Wowowin” has now managed to edge out the previously toprated “Wildflower”, just when its new season started and Zsa Zsa Padilla was even added to the cast as one of the antagonists. You can check the exact results of the AGB ratings on the internet.
All this means that GMA’s afternoon think tank really knows more about what clicks with TV audiences. In comparison, GMA’s evening primetime shows suffer when pitted against their Kapamilya competitors, except for Heart Evangelista’s “My Korean Jagiya” which is the only Kapuso show rating high on primetime since it is very light hearted and is very successful in edging out its rival “The Good Son”.
So maybe, GMA management should assign the primetime slot to the afternoon creative team for a while. We honestly believe that, at this point, it’s difficult to topple the star-studded Kapamilya action dramas led by Coco Martin and Kathniel. If ever GMA would pit something against them, it has to offer an alternative that’s really something different, not similarly themed action-telefantasyas.
Their best bet would be to come up with more affecting serious dramas, especially about infidelity, since people never get tired of watching this kind of entertainment fare. And they better make sure they have the right drama stars who will be very believable in portraying these stories about the eternal love triangle.
