Jeepers Creepers 3 Movie Review: Revives The Horror Franchise That Started In 2001 With The Evil Creature Now Nastier And Merciless Than Ever

THE FIRST “Jeepers Creepers” was shown in 2001, featuring an evil creature disguised as a scarecrow (played by Jonathan Breck) terrorizing a farming town in rural Florida. It was a hit as a roadtrip film with a dark and twisted turn, so a sequel was made in 2003, “Jeepers Creepers 2”, another modest hit. Both movies were written and directed by Victor Salva.

Now, after 15 years, “Jeepers Creepers 3” comes along to revive the franchise, still from Salva. “Jeepers 3” is actually set between the events of 1 and 2. Shortly after the first movie, the cops discover the Creeper’s truck filled with dead bodies. Sgt. Davis (Brandon Smith) tells Sheriff Dan Tashtego (Stan Shaw) that the Creeper is a creature who’s been around for thousands of years and must be stopped, but the sheriff doesn’t believe him.

New characters are introduced, like Addison (Gabrielle Haugh), her grandma Gaylen (Meg Foster), plus a group of meddlesome frat boys who get the comeuppance they deserve from the creature to provide the requisite kills in this kind of violent slasher film.

Grandma Gaylen sees a vision of her son Kenny, who was killed by the Creeper many years ago. Kenny warns her that the Creeper is returning to get something buried on their land and will kill anyone who’s there.

The Sheriff informs Sgt. Davis that he has organized a team to hunt down the Creeper to kill it once and for all. A group of daring teenage frat boys also try to take on the Creeper on their dirt bikes, but the Creeper gets back on them ruthlessly.

Addison goes to a plantation house to deliver hay but it turns out the Creeper is there and abducts her. Grandma Gaylen discovers that what the Creeper wants to retrieve is his own severed hand buried in her front yard. When she touches it, she lapses into a hypnotic state.

She is revived when the Sheriff and Sgt. Davis come along and she tells them that the hand contains secrets about the Creeper’s origins. They then try to find out the Creeper’s location but their encounter with the creature ends in gory disaster as the Creeper is not vulnerable to bullets.

Addison is able to escape from the Creeper’s truck and the creature pursues her, but somehow, she manages to fight back and put one over him by impaling him in the head with a metal rod. But it’s not really the end of the Creeper, as he seems to be headed for another sequel as indicated in the final scene where a character from “Jeepers 1”, Gina Phillips as Trish, is seen typing on her computer urging people to fight the Creeper and vowing to avenge the death of her brother who was killed in “Jeepers 1”.

If you’re a fan of this franchise movie, then you’d appreciate this latest edition as “Jeepers Creepers 2” shows the creature being merciless and nastier than ever. We just wish that we get to feel more emotionally invested in the human characters, so that we can sympathize with them totally when the Creeper comes along to sow mayhem.

The movie also aims to reveal some of the mystery behind the fearsome creature, whose mysterious origins have actually been left unexplored up to now while it’s leaving gruesome tragedy in its wake. As the movie ends, nothing much is really discovered and looks like this is their way of teasing the audience to watch out for more “Jeeper Creepers” sequels.
