RICKY DAVAO was a hit playing the gay uncle of Heart Evangelista in “My Korean Jagiya”. Now, he plays a straight role as the long lost dad of Barbie Forteza in “Inday Will Always Love You” that starts airing on Monday night to replace TOTGA, with Manilyn Reynes as the mother.
“Manilyn and I have flashback scenes when we were younger,” he says. “Sa story, nagkahiwalay kami with Manilyn and Barbie based in Manila at ako naman, may ari ng maraming businesses sa Cebu. Mapapadpad si Barbie sa Cebu and by chance, magkikita kami while I’m having a heart attack in public and she’ll help me, without her knowing na ako pala ang ama niya.”
How come he’s been focusing on acting now, doing one teleserye after another? Is he turning his back on being a director since his last directorial job was still “Legally Blind” with Janine Gutierrez? Now, he’s also in the cast of four new movies, including the current Star Cinema release, “Kasal”, where he plays the controversial role of the flamnoyant transgender dad of one of the leads.
“E, natataong ang daming offers for acting. Alangan namang tanggihan ko. But I do miss directing. Kung minsan nga, sa taping, pag may tumawag ng Direk, napapatayo, akala ko akong tinatawag, but I’ll remember na artista pala ako sa show and not the director. Actually, dalawa yung offers for directing na tinanggihan ko dahil nalinya nga ako sa pag-arte lately. My goal now is to direct a full length movie kasi puro TV pa lang ang dinidirek ko. Do you know that some of top directors now sa ABS, like Cathy Molina and Mae Cruz, mga assistant ko yan nung nagdidirek ako ng TV shows sa ABS? If I’d get hold of a really good material for a movie, I think I’m ready to direct a full length film.”
