GINA ALAJAR is giddy with the praises she’s getting for the huge success of the hit new soap, “Onanay”, that she is currently directing. And why not? The show quickly went up the ratings charts in its first week of telecast and some folks are even saying: “Sana ito na lang ang ipinantapat sa long running show sa kabila kasi kakaiba talaga ang atraksiyon niya sa viewers.”
What the show offers is the novelty of having a real life midget play the title role. As the vertically challenged heroine, newcomer Jo Berry more than fits the image of the usual underdog. When other people and Cherie Gil, as her haughty mother in law, maltreat her for lacking in height, your heart really goes out for her. As some viewers say: “Nakakaawa talaga siya.”
For this, Jo thanked her acting coaches: Roence Santos, Jo Macasa and Anne Villegas. “Big help talaga sila sa akin,” she says.
No doubt Jo is good, but Cherie is even more effective in her role as Jo’s main antagonist. Giving them superb support is Nora Aunor as Nelia, Jo’s very caring mom who’s always ready to protect her. Adrian (formerly Luis) Alandy also excels in a short role as Jo’s ill fated husband who leaves her a baby girl.
This week, don’t miss the appearance of young GMA actresses in the roles of Jo’s two daughters. Kate Valdez is her daughter with Adrian Alandy who’s adopted by Cherie Gil, while Mikee Quintos is the daughter she bore after she was raped by some heartless thugs.
“Maski ako, nagulat sa napakainit na pagtanggap ng viewers sa aming show,” says Direk Gina. “Hindi ko akalaing ganung karami ang agad na magkakagusto and I want to thank them all from the bottom of my heart for their unstinting support. Tuloy-tuloy lang po kayo sa panonood dahil mas marami pang makadurog-pusong episodes ang naghihintay sa inyo sa kakaibang drama ng buhay na handog ng ‘Onanay’.”
